stop with the trolling already. Craig? *tap tap* are you in there?

Anyways, if you are serious about this, you really do need to read up on how your car works, get a basic haynes manual, do a search online and read some FAQs, and just educate yourself a little on the theory behind a water cooled car.

How long have you owned this car? have you ever checked the oil or coolant levels? Ignorance of your porsche will kill it, and/or you.

amaf:

First, you have to know that there is not a car on this planet that doesn't require maintanence at one point or another, and that costs some time and some $$$. Selling your car won't solve that problem. Buying a new car will allieviate that problem for a few years though.

As was pointed out, don't operate the car while it's overheated... very bad and expensive things will happen.

Okay, the others pointed out the fan problem... if the car is heating up you should hear the fan(s) kick on. You can just let the car idle and after about 10 minutes the fans should kick on. If the needle gets into the red kill it, if the fans have not come on by then, then you need to fix the fan(s), or the temp switch.

If the fan(s) work. Then check the hoses and make sure there are no leaks. Replace any/all bad hoses. Drain the cooling system (pull the hoses and the block drain plugs). Then flush the cooling system with a quality cooling system cleaner (it could be mucked up with rust/sludge). Then properly fill the system with coolant and water. Finally bleed the cooling system as was described in an above post.

Be patient, skipping steps or rushing will just be a potential cause of disaster and will just agravate you. A Haynes manual is a huge help, if you can't find one try Ebay.

Yeah, this could take an entire day but it's cheap to do. You could take it to a mechanic and expect to pay a couple of hundred bucks in labor and chemicals.

Good luck,
Abdul

I'm not looking to drive a **** Honda. I might sell my car, and purchase a '84-86 vette. Today I'm going to do a check to see if the fans work, than I'm going to TRY to bleed the system. I'm going to follow the owners manual and hopefully all goes well.

Until the vette over heats as well Just cycle through cars until they give you a prob eh? Or you could learn how to fix it, and save yourself the trouble of owning 54 cars by the time your 20

Ok, he's the update:

Today I got on the phone w/ dan and we talked about bleeding the cooling system. He went through all the options, and steps. Me and a friend went to buy antifreeze from kmart. So as we enter kmart my temp. gauge is getting to the third line, so we pull over in the parking lot, and let it cool down while we get the antifreeze. We fill the car up with antifreeze to the maximum, and turn the car on to leave, and it's still on the third marker. So what we do is turn on the a/c and heat, the car starts to cool down, it gets down to the second marker. So we decide to eat and come back, when we come back it's down to the first marker, so I was about to leave when I seen a 87 944 turbo parked down the parking lot. So I thought the best thing to do is park next to it, and wait for the owner to come out to talk to him about my problem. As we're standing by my car, another man comes up to us, and asked if I owned the 944 turbo, and I told him No. So, we start talking and I told him about my car problem, and he gives me the diff. problems it may be. Than the 944 turbo owner comes out, and we start conversating about what could be the issue. Both of them told me to run the car with both the a/c and fan on while I was driving to cool the car down. They ran a serious of tests, and decided the fans weren't going on, and they believed it to be the thermostat or the fuse. He told me the fan should be running even though your engine is off until the car colds down. Now what do you guys think?

Check the fuses in the fuse box...

look it up in the table what fuses are for what...and check em...pull em out and look to see if they are blown or not...

If thats not it then the thermoswitch is bad and needs to be replaced.

Also, you dont need to actually turn on the AC...just hit the AC button to engage the fans...but dont turn the climate control fans on.

Somebody needs to spring the $19.95 for a Haynes manual. We can answer lots of questions here, but we can't (a) diagnose long distance or (b) hold someone's hand. "The difficult we answer immediately, the impossible may take a little longer".

Oh, and you'll also be happy to know that you should use antifreeze that is safe for aluminum engines only..

It must be phosphate free...

Also...instead of crying for someone to come help you...why don't you do what I said...CHECK THE FUSES!!!

The fuses are the old german style type under the drivers dashboard. Anyway, the guy told me to look for a crack, if I do find one I have no way of getting the damn part in a auto store.

Also, for antifreeze I used the prestone antifreeze, how is that?

I would not normally respond to this type of post in such a negative manner but amaf...you are really an idiot. You ask for advice, people give it and then you proceed to whine and cry about how you can't do it <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> . It's pathetic, buck up pal. Also, try to accept the reality that you just may be too mechanically challenged and unwilling to learn, to own a Porsche. These cars require some degree of attention and they don't suffer fools well. Go buy a Haynes manual and try reading it instead of crying for help like some kind of little twinkie.

This is better than the wife thread, and it's on topic too!

The Prestone you put in is almost certainly not the right stuff, but that sounds like the least of your worries right now.
