I'm doing the belts on my 85.5 NA and I had the 15mm balance shaft belt but bought the 18mm belt by accident. Are they interchangeable? The 18mm fits but there is very little clearance from side to side on the pulleys.

Can you still buy the 15 mm belt? I have the 18 mm belt on my car (944 '83) and it works, but I think it makes more noise..

I mounted 18 mm belt instead of the original 15 mm on my 944 (1983) last spring. It works fine, and certainly looks more durable.
FYI: I did tensioning of both belts "by feel" only, as it feels to me like a waste to invest $400 in the tensioning tool. Others would probably say I'm reckless. Maybe they are right, but so far, so good,
