Cool. Sounds like you're halfway there already. What about the transmission? Considered beefing that up?

No. The "S" crank pulley is not the same. The harmonics of the 3L is different and requires the weighted S2 pulley.

And no...I'm afraid that the 968 tensioner is completely different as well. Do your homework on this. Swapping into an "S" is a bit more tedious than simply swapping into an S2. The wiring is the particular problem area.

Go to the S2 and 968 forums and search for more information and read up. This can get expensive. I am up to $5K (parts and labor) already and the motor hasn't even been placed in the bay yet.

Just rear-ended you say? You should be able to sell/swap parts for the manual DME you need EASY...what did you pay for the wreck? Parting the interior and good body panels should bring you out ahead if anything. (if its a two-tone interior, I'd grab that for your own car and sell yours. )

I say go for it!

Guys...don't **** on his parade!

Sheesh.

Pull everything and part what you don't need; that will help pay for the build.

I know the tensioners are different. Perhaps you didn't get my question. Do I have to replace the variocam chain tensioner as a matter of course as I have to periodically replace my cam chain tensioner as they wear out over time. This is in reference to recommended periodic preventative maintenance.

May I ask why your build cost is so expensive? Were you not starting with a donor car and are now getting nickel and dimed for every small thing missing?

It is unlikely that the tensioner itself will need to be replaced but you should check, and likely replace, the upper and lower pads, and the chain. Take a good look at the camshaft teeth as well as they are known to break and chip.

A past rennlister also posted wiring notes for the swap here: http://members.rennlist.com/tholyoak...wap_wiring.htm

I wrecked my 94 968 in March and had an 89 944 that had come with ABS. I pulled the front engine/struts complete and the rear torsion tube assembly complete from the 968 and installed it with no real issues. I also pulled the 89 wiring harness out and installed the 968 harness to retain the 968 instrument cluster. I also wanted the speedometer to work and the 968 ABS is different hence possibly better than the 89 944 ABS. Also I installed a solid 944 transmission mount and used the 944 cross-member to make it work.

I had to slightly modify the lower radiator support for the 968 radiator as it was a little bigger and I modified the overflow tank as the 944 tank is defiantly smaller. One oddity was the clutch master cylinder is different in the 89 944 and 94 968 (different part numbers). I just raced the car this weekend for the 1st time and the 968 clutch master cylinder failed, so ordered the 944 clutch master cylinder. Oh, exhaust is different, 3 bolts on the 944 cat and 4 bolts on the 968 cat.

Get the Clock. The analog clock that sits under the radio. both my 944's have them from 968's.

Someone must have mentioned the teardrop mirrors as well?

I believe you'll also need the throttle cable from the 968 as it is a little longer...
