Default Speed and Reference sensors

Hey everyone,

It's that time again - the snow is gone and the 951 is ready to come out of hibernation.

The speed and reference sensors have always been an issue in my car (it will die at a stoplight and won't start until I wiggle the connectors at the back of the manifold) but it was a rare occurrence until the end of last summer where it would literally die at least once or twice every time I drove it... I put the car away and decided to worry about it next season, which is now.

Where should I begin with this? I feel like maybe the sensors themselves are fine (and I hope so because they are bloody expensive) so maybe I can do something with just those connectors?

Those bloody connectors can be a bother. I had exactly the same problem with starting when hot and found that a pin inside one of the connectors was bent and somehow with everything getting hot it was either grounding out or just going high resistance. Pull the connectors apart, making sure the little wire clips don't go helicoptering across the garage, and look inside the female connectors to see that the pins are lined up properly. cleaning doesn't hurt either. Use contact cleaner spray. Good luck.

Cool so that fixed it right up for you? That would be nice - it's kind of nerve racking to sit at every stop light and say "pleasedontdiepleasedontdiepleasedontdie"

I'll go check it out.

There isn't much that can go wrong with the sensor itself short of physical damage. It's just a coil of very thin wire around a magnet. It's all encased in a stainless steel casing.
The harness side of the connector is replacable. It's a standard 3-pin AMP connector, goggle sould find a source for you.
Unfortunately, the male side on the sensor itself is not replacable. You need to replace the entire sensor. The BMW part for an '88ish M3 is about half the cost of the Porsche spec part.

Ok so upon a closer inspection, I have found that the wires on the female side are all torn up.. the P/O apparently tried to fix it with electrical tape and its a pretty sketchy job so I guess I'm going to try to re-do what he did just less sketchy?

I have had so many issues with the S & F sensors (actually the connectors to the sensors).

Read this post:

Hope it helps!

They can be a MAJOR pita to replace as they are most likely stuck in. Follow the procedure at clarks-garage.com

As for the price, don't buy the porsche part, but the BMW part. Porsche markup is insane, the BMW bosch sensor is exactly the same with a longer wire, yes more part for half the cost of the porsche part. I and quite a few others use these sensors.

$10 less through BMW supplier
