Question 1988 944S Idle problems

Hi everyone

I am having an idle problem that I see many of you have experienced. My 1988 S model just began hunting while in idle. It does seem that the idle problem is temperature dependent, as it wanders between 800-1400 RPM on cooler ambient days. I live in the San Francisco area, so cooler means 55-60 degrees.

Since I am not experienced enough to work on the car myself, so I took it to my mechanic, D&M Motors in Palo Alto today. They told me they could not replicate the problem, so I was not able to have it fixed. The car runs perfectly fine when not at idle and idles fine in temperatures over 70 degrees, although will surge occasionally at idle.

The location of many of the items you mention in your posts seems different than what I have found on my S model, like the location of the throttle, the test bay and other bits.

To keep the cost down on repairing my car, I'm hoping that you can give me some specifics from others who own the S model and have experienced the wandering idle problem. Thanks much for your time.

Mark

Not that familiar with this model, but if it has a cold start valve, that'd be the first place to check. Might also be a thermostat stuck wide open, not allowing the car to warm to operating temp on cooler days.

I don't have an idle problem but there is a idle stablizer. It is under the intake in the middle. the connecter is on top next to the injector harness.

I had a idle problem and got it resolved yesterday. The problem was that I had a very small fuel leak at the fuel rail. Obviously the fuel pressure was always changing.
