I've always shipped wheels using USPS (Parcel Post)...never had any problems and is generally pretty cheap. I've shipped a bumper via greyhound before and it was cheap, but you have to drop it off at a greyhound station and the reciever has to go pick it up from one too...so this doesn't always work if you aren't in a big city.

I've shipped wheels fedex and UPS...I received the wheels via fedex with tires - the seller had put protective padding over the face of the wheel and then shrinkwrapped the wheel/tire/pad bundle and shipped them like that. Seemed fairly economical insomuch as there was little cost for packaging or extra space on the fedex truck, but the wheels all arrived in good shape and are still on my car (the tires are not, although I did get about 18 months of use out of them).

Just wheels or tires too? Have used UPS with lots of success for both. It does get expensive with tires.

Why bother with boxes? I just bought a set of wheels from a Rennlister, they showed up with FedEx shipping labels stuck on the wheels themselves...no boxes.

If they have Tires, you can just cardboard the sides, and strap them for shipping. If they do not have tires, you should prolly put them in boxes.

I just packaged a set of Wheels only, using 2 - 24x24x24 boxes, and enough packing material to survive a war (aka UPS).

Shipping 2 wheels per box is generally the best option also if you didn't know.

I used to ship wheels all over the country. Best is one per box unless you have a very strong box and strapping. I had 2 in one box and have the bottom fall out when they arrived. (Don't believe for a minute that they aren't tossed around a bit on the dock and in the truck.)
UPS was cheaper than fedex for ground, fedex for rush.

I've wound up using FedEx Ground / Home Delivery as they seem to have more economical rates than UPS especially for larger / heavier items (even oversized such as shipping a dash or seats). Plus I've also found FedEx to have consistently better tracking than UPS (where the last 3 items shipped UPS did not have status updates nor let me know items were out for delivery...even sat in UPS warehouse for 3 days even though the location was 10 miles away I couldn't pick them up early). I had to wait until the first delivery attempt.

I haven't had much success with UPS either. Best cost-wise is USPS, but only if the package is small enough and light enough -- otherwise I go FedEx Ground. I think it's cheaper if you're shipping to/from a commercial location, but for residential-to-residential, forget UPS.

UPS charges extra handling fee if an item is not in cardboard (eg: tires strapped together). Not sure about others.

you guys separate wheels and tires when shipping, or ship wheels with tires on them inflated and everything?

I have had the best luck with Fedex, I usually put cardboard circles over the rim parts and then use furniture saran wrap to wrap them up in pairs. Keeps teh weight way down and the tires fully inflated protect the rims. Even shipped a set to Japan that way with no problems at all.
