I've had a pair of the "MK1" camber plates (EBay specials) for almost a year now. I'm starting to think that the upper bearing is no longer freely rotating. The symptom is a "doink-doink-doink" noise I get when turning the steering wheel during slow, sharp turns (e.g. parking). My gut tells me that the lower end of the strut is turning (it has no choice!) and because the upper bearing is binding, the strut piston itself is turning, and the weight bearing pivot is the spring itself, thus the "doink." Does that sound right?
(PS: I heard a similar complaint from another Rennlister, but his spring was not rotating, so he had complete binding. I'm thinking of slathering the spring end with heavy grease.)
To their credit, the original vendor is going to replace that part of the plates just for shipping costs.
Is there any real downside to driving the car while it's in this condition?

Funny, I just finished installing my koni coils using the stock upper mounts and have this very sound... I wonder if I should pull them apart and grease up the upper bearing and see if it goes away.
