Post question: date of airbag intro in 944

A friend of mine is considering getting a 944 for his son. Does anyone know when airbags were introduced in 944 models as standard or as options?

many thanks,

I know the 1987 944 Turbo was the first production car to have dual airbags as standard equipment. Not sure about the NA models, or whether the '86 Turbo had a driver -side airbag.

Good luck.

'87 was the first year that the 944 had airbags available.

Airbags were not offered in '86.

I would not make airbags a must-have checkbox item. Much more important are passive safety features inherent to all "good" cars -- crumple zones, overbuilt passenger compartment cage, door beams... oh, and EXCELLENT HANDLING!

The 924 was built to comply to a proposed but never-enacted European safety standard. What was it, like 50kph rollover? Someone help me here.

There's a reason our little (EPA: minicompact) cars are pushing 3000 pounds.

Airbags preclude tinkering that a young Porsche owner should be encouraged to engage in, IMHO.

According to my collection of factory brochures, in '87 airbags were an option. Most '87 models you see will have airbags except the stripped down models. Airbags became standard in all '88 and '89 models. But, one has to wonder: how trustworthy are airbags that are at least 14 years old?

My '87 S does not have any airbags but does have the '018' option (Leather STR wheel/Raised Hub 380MM(Not available w/ Airbags).

The service schedule calls for airbag replacement every 5 years (I think). At least I don't have that $$$$ problem.

Sure about that? They might have been standard in turbos....

My 88 has M018, too.

D'OH!! <img src="graemlins/icon501.gif" border="0" alt="[icon501]" /> I thought the thread was for Turbos. Yeah, you are right about the NA. Correction: only the Turbo had standard airbags in '88 and '89.

all US spec '87 951 had dual airbags standard.
In ROW they were optional even in '91 models.

ive seen 10 1987 951's they all had both airbags, come to think of it ive never heard of a car not to have both airbags, you cant get just one side airbag, if you see a car like this its because the wheel was bought from a junkyard and put in a non-airbag 944 turbo

It's my understanding that starting in '87 airbags were an option on the N/As up untill '89.
