My backup lights do not work, even though I have changed out the bulbs. I have also checked the fuses and everything is good. Any suggestions?
I have an 85.5 944.

Where exactly is the switch at on the tranny?

From memory it's on the passanger side of the transmission, located close to the linkage. It looks like a coolant temp switch with two prongs sticking out of it.

I had the same problem with the backup lights, and the culprit was the switch. At first, simply removing the switch, cleaning it, and replacing it solved the problem. However, the problem reappeared a few weeks later. A new switch can be obtained very cheaply (>$20 I think) from the usual distributors (e.g., Vertex, Performance Products). Since the job is a bit of a PITA, you might just go ahead and get the new switch.
As mentioned previously, the switch is on top of the tranny, best accessed by getting under the passenger side of the car. It might be hard to see the actual switch, but you should see the wiring leading to the switch. I can't remember the actual size of the nut; I used a rather large adjustable wrench to remove the switch.
