Post Do you have to remove the crank to pull the pistons?

Or can you just disconnect the con-rods and pull them out the bottom? I think I may like to do my rings sometime in the near future - you know, just in case I run out of things to do...

Welllllll. You don't have to remove the crank to remove the pistons, but you do need to remove the oil pan, and removing the oil pan means removing the front suspension cross-member and the associated parts. Once you have the pan off, the head off, you can unbolt the rod nuts and pop the pistons out of the top.

Of course, if you're going to go through all this trouble, I'd just pull the entire engine and rebuild the bottom end and replace the main bearings and inspect the oil pump, etc at the same time.

You'll need to pull the pan and head. The rods will come out the top not the bottom. The crank can stay in.

Pulling the engine is a lot easier than trying to wiggle pistons out the bottom...
