Periodic engine groaning/moaning
Every once and a while, and usually at RPMs above 3500 or so, the engine will make kind of a moaning sound. The remedy I have found is to let off the gas and put the car into neutral, so the revs drop to idle, and then reengage the gears. What might cause this?

Do you have an automatic transmission?
On another note, automatic transmissions, drum brakes, and air conditioning are three automotive things that I really don't want to know too much about.

Oh yeah, forgot to say it's a 90 5 speed S2. The clutch has about 9k miles on it, and the engine oil has about 700 miles on it.

A moan would seem to be something to do with belts or bearings. I'd wonder about the water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor, or any of the rollers that tension the timing belt...
good luck

Maybe I didn't catch this, but how long is this "moaning" lasting? My '83 used to groan for a second or two when I was losing coolant from the overfill tank (via the cap...)

Usually I only let it last a second or two, because once I catch it I'll shift into neutral. I don't know how long it lasts on its own.

I think I know what sound you are talking about. It only happened around certain rpm's. And when I let off the gas or take it out of gear the sound stopped.
Just a week ago I changed out my belts, w/p and rollers. I haven't heard the sound since. I think my belts were fine, but all my rollers could spin very freely.
I'd say the sound woundn't hurt anything. (If in fact my sound and your sound are the same thing.) But I would start saving up for the belt, w/p, and roller replacement.
Also I replaced the nylon pad, but mine was in decent shape. The chain was in great shape, so I don't think the sound was coming from anyting in that area.
Hope that helps.

There is an issue with the oil relief valve, it seems to be particularly prevalent in the S2 models for some reason. If this is the cause, it is not a life threatening situation
Anyway, it is characterized by a low pitched moan, but it usually occurs between 1,000 and 2,000 RPM’s.
There are a lot of people on the S2 E-mail list (944-s2@rennlist.org )that have experience with this issue. You have to go to the main part of the Rennlist site to sign up for the E-mail forums (http://www.rennlist.org/signin/index.htm ) and you will need to select the 944S2 in the “For Which List” field (it is way down the list)
