I have a new Videocamera and i have earlier used analog one, so this digital is new for me.
I had two visitors from Canada (hockey players)and i made a one hour tape durig their visit here.
I promised to make a CD for them from this tape.
The problem is quite big files. The program (Presto Videoworks 5.0)which came with the camera (Canon MV 530i) makes .AVI files.Ten minutes are about 2 GB.Is there any kind of program i can use to make these files smaller, so i can save them into CD ? Iam running currently Win 98SE operating system.

Look through some of the encoding options in the program. I have not used that particular piece of software but there's bound to be some Video Quality options.

Yes there is! You have to compress the files. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to compress the video in realtime, so you have to dump that movie to the hard-drive first. Do it in 9:30 increments to fall just under the 2gb file-size limit for Windows.
Then you should download the DiVX codec if you haven't already. The 5.02 version gives the best compression yet. You can get very decent video quality at 5mb/min. http://www.divx.com
Next download and install VirtualDub. It's a simple program to let you read those raw video files and compress them with the DivX codec down to 5mb/min. It will also let you join all the separate segments into one continuous movie. http://www.virtualdub.org

IIRC dazzle makes "digital video creator" hardware that will let you encode in realtime.
it was around $250 i think, look through their site for info.

I use Adobe Premere 6.0 for all my editing needs. It's Pro quality and will allow you to compress on the fly. It's VERY expensive though and unless you have a VERY fast computer, compression will be slooooowwwww.

I'd have to agree with danno. Virtual Dub is a great program and is pretty easy to use. You can adjust the bitrate so you can pretty much make the file as large or small as you want. Do a little bit of math and you can make your file the best quality that you can to still fit on one cd. I have always had very good results. I use it to... uh, make backups of other video discs.
