Question R12 or R134 air conditioner... how do I tell which I have?

How do I tell whether my car has R12 or R134 in the air conditioner? It needs a recharge but I want to know which one I'll need so I know the scope of work.

If your system has been retrofitted to R134a it should have service port adapters on it that are not compatible with the R12 charging hoses. It should also have a new sticker to alert the AC tech that the system has been recharged with R134a.
