Post Rear Seat Three Point Seat Bets

Does anyone know if you can put three point (Lap-Shoulder) seat belts into an 86 that just has lap belts. My kids are old enough to not use child seats, but I would prefer lap-shoulder belts in the rear "kiddie seats"

You "SHOULD" be able to. Does your 86 have a large plastic philips head looking plug up on the rear pillars? This is where the shoulder eye loop anchors. Also the rear side carpets should have a small slot with a plastic bracket similar to where the front seat belts retract into the interior. Under the carpet behind these you should see the anchor pillar for the belt retractor for the rear seat belts. Let me know if your's resembles this and I'll try to get you a list of the parts, spacers and bolts etc.

Good luck.

I have a 1986 944 NA, and I don't believe it can take 3-point belts without major work. I have the screws in the side above the seats (for the shoulder anchors) that Roberto mentioned. However, there are no slots in the rear panel or carpet. I haven't taken the carpet up to look myself yet, but George B. at 944 Ecology tells me that the '86 cars do not have the anchors. I'd look myself right now, but my car is getting painted.

I have a soon-to-be-four year old, and I very much wish I had 3-point belts in the rear. It's nearly impossible to get a car seat back there comfortably, a booster seat doesn't do much good without a 3-point belt, and I don't feel safe with him in just a lap belt.

If anyone has any ideas, let us know!!! That is other than upgrading to a later model 944 or 968 .

My '86 has the plugs in the c-pillars too, I've never looked behind the side carpetin the back, but there are no slots in the carpet. I was halfway to the digital camera, when I remembered the car's in the shop.
My little guy is only 2 1/2, but he's huge hor his age. Sooner or later I'll need this info myself, so I'll be watchin' this thread

The anchor points for the rear seat shoulder belt inertial reels are further back, at the level of the front of the hatchback strut pivot on the body.
There are formed steel pieces bridging between the wheel well and the frame around the hatch opening. The anchor is in the middle of this. If you don't have these, then you'll need to weld them in, repaint, etc. if you want the factory rear 3-point harnesses. Not as easy as a bolt in.

I have researched this a bit. To do this properly, you need to get the bracket that welds in the back to hold the take-up reel. I managed to get a set from a fellow renlister who found them in Germany, I beleive. I can get you the part numbers if interested.I don't think they are easily found, since no one else i have talked to had heard of such a part, but it is a Porsche part. A clean install will require new rear/side carpets, since the bracket bulges out. ( I probably will cut them to make a flap for now. Look at a car with the belts and you can see how it goes in.

I have been considering just bolting to that threaded insert. The insert is where the guide would go and is also commonly used for a racing harness bar, so It should be strong enough. (insert full disclaimers here).

One thought I have had is to attach a manual belt to that point and skip the welding, but I haven't found a source for a belt system.

Hope that helps
Dave

I figure I'll just tell the wife that it is important for the safety of our child that I upgrade to a later model Porsche with three-point belts at all seating positions! <img src="graemlins/r.gif" border="0" alt="[king]" />

I think I heard somewhere that '87 944s have the mounts for the 3-point belts, but not the actual belts. Can anyone verify? In what model year did Porsche actually start installing the 3-point belts in the rear (for U.S. cars)?

Operator -
Could you post a picture of what it looks like in the rear hatch area where the retractor sits?
I have read the other posts, but I need a visual of the setup.
Thanks

Operator (or anyone)--

Any chance you could pull up the carpet and take a pic of where the retractor is attached to the metal?

Hi PeteL,

As luck would have it, I just removed the rear seatbelt system entirely from my 1989 944S2, and I'll sell you the whole shebang for $60, including shipping. You will need to weld the anchor brackets in place (maybe torch them or hacksaw them out of a junkyard 944), and possibly cut a little sheet metal out of the structure to accommodate the retractor reels. And, as mentioned, you'll need the late-model hatch carpet with the retractor bulges for a finished look. E-mail me if you're interested.
