Tim,
One thing I don't understand . . .
If a 944 is not "practical" for you right now, then why are you even considering an Eclipse or a Prelude?
In what way is either of them more practical? Both, like the 944 are two-door 2+2 cars. All three cars are rather fuel efficient. The 944 is probably the best when it comes to hauling stuff, thanks to the rear hatch. Before the wife and I bought a used Suburban I used my 944 to haul 50 lb bags of horse feed. I think I would put six or eight at a time in the rear with the rear seat folded down.
Perhaps you are talking about maintenance? I guess the Prelude may be more cost effective in that area. However, the money you would spend on a nice, not-too-high mileage Prelude would go a long way toward keeping up the 944.
Just my $0.02

I hate payments and I'm sure you will after the first for second month on paying a car when your buddies ask you to go out on the town with them but you can't since your so strapped for cash. The 944 is paid for isn't she? Shoot keep that way and just do some more repairs it will be all good!

I don't even understand why you would waste your time checking that Audi out when they are asking way over market value for it, at 12.9 it would have to be the most mint one I have ever seen and come with a lifetime supply of gas, check at a local auction near you because they sell in the $5-9k range around here depending on the miles and options.

I just sold my 93 90cs quattro and i know i will own another audi. They can be a bit cantankerous (sic) but all in all are great cars. i know i will miss the quattro. only thing i would say is that there are lots of 1.8t a4s out there, look around and maybe find a 5-speed?, there are so many rather inexpensive and effective mods for that motor it is rediculous.

I found it cheaper in the long run to get another car I KNEW what to look for, how to work on, and a ready used parts supply in the yard..
I cant wait to get it on Road America and see what really breaks!!! <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

First, the pricing of that A4... if its a Tiptronic it has the updated dash and a few engine things... they looked mostly the same all the way to 2001. With only 50K and well kept, it sounds like a decent deal to me, as long as it is "right". But, since I'm not selling it, it never hurts to negotiate! ;-)
In regards to that light, I can't quite "see" it. Perhaps you are describing a brake pad sensor light? Unfortunately, I also don't know how to check on the coilpacks. I would suggest calling Audi of North America with the VIN, OR, try a local dealer, they may be able (willing) to check and diagnose for you.
One of the aspects of selling these things is I have a Service dept attached, though I know a few things about the mechanicals of a car, I tend to defer to the pros!
Another thing to look at under the car would be the brake pads and rotors... pricy to replace.
Good luck,

I did a PPI today on the A4 and the car is in GREAT shape! All of the body panels are in perfect alignment, not dings or nothing. The interior is flawless. The exhaust is in good shape and it has brand new pads and rotors. The only thing I found was a leaky valve cover gasket and that didn't look to hard to fix at all.
The only thing that will keep me from this car is the automatic 5 speed transmission. I think I can deal with it though.
