I agree with the Volvo 240 option on guy proposed. I'll also offer up the Mercedes 300D wagon. Runs on diesel, goes like a pack mule, ton of room, good comfort and convenience. You can get one for next to nothing these days.

If you can find one, you can get a 89 or 90 Lexus LS400 for the same price as those A4s mentioned. You want to talk about bulletproof. Top notch in every way. Every option youd need or really ever want except navigation and rear park assistance and lets face it we all need that. I saw one for like $13,900 not too long ago in the paper. A 10-12 yr old Lexus will run better than 97% of the new stuff rolling off the assembly line. If I was in college, which thankfully Im not anymore, thats what Id try to get, espec. if I planned long commutes home.

My father has a 95 Lexus LS400.......He is 56 years old..........even he hates it. He's always complaining about how floaty it is and how the seats feel like spring loaded seats from his 89 Mercedes 190. Anyway his biggest complaint...BORING TO DRIVE.

Anyhow...it's impossible to keep up with technology. That's what it comes down to. If your 951's had dual cams and multi-valve heads, you'd have a chance. It's the same with my Corrado (SOHC 8V). It's built like a rock, but it has high-boost asthma inherent in the 2 valve single cam design.

The only test I read on the SRT clocked a 14.0 @ 102 mph. This means that under ideal conditions, shaving off one or two tenths should be possible. A 13-second FWD 4-banger, off the showroom floor...for under 20 grand. If that is the truth, they have a real gem in that car.

I wonder what it will take to get that thing down to about 12.9-13.0 @ 108-110. Sadly, it probably won't take much more than higher boost, intake/exhaust, good gas, and better rubber.

In short...I am jealous. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

You dont buy a LS400 to speed around town. Its to get you in total lux from one place to another. Even I couldnt stand driving my Porsche every day. In traffic, when its 95 degrees out, give me an LS400 or the like any day. The last thing on my mind quite often is driving excitement.

My X 89 951S was $48k almost $49K...However, it was a great value when you saw the artical that (Was it road & Track) did about is vs. the 911 Turbo of the same year...It smoked the much more expensive 911 Turbo by OVER 2 seconds per lap on the track!
While these cars usually aren't bought for investment, it is very important that you buy them "right" as the depreciation is quite low with good service & upkeep!

UD, it's obvious that you don't buy a Lexus to speed around town. But it's not suppoed to put you to sleep either. I and my dad are happy with our 535i's for the purpose of luxury and it keeps the adrenaline pumping. Also, sorry to burst alot of peoples bubbles. The Lexus seating is absolutely horrid. Spring loaded seats whish squish and deform to easily which on long drives leaves you feeling like your sitting on an old mattress with bad springs.

I bought a VAG tool that connected to the OBD-II port, and could monitor and log torque (and a bunch of other variables) on my laptop. Pretty cool!

Not sure if it had a table of torque values given intake temp, timing, boost, etc, but it was crank values.
