Any words of wisdom on replacing axle verses installing CV joint kit. Price difference is $200, for both right and left.
Was wondering about time difference for a never done that weekend mechanic. Am aware of special tool around $13. + shipping.

What special tool? Heavy duty snap ring pliers?
If you have the time and not the dollars get the pieces and replace the CV's on the axles. It's not that hard.
If you have a serious lack of patience then get the remanufactured axles. Shop around. I think you can do better on the price difference.
Either way use a new bit to extract the socket head bolts and replace them with new ones.

I seem to be having trouble finding the 12 point 8mm, to remove six bolts. I checked sears/local Napa/advance/autozone. Finally got the advise of Baumtools.com. Maybe mis quoteing it as a special tool, should have been hard to find tool.
Really great people ST49X-M8 for $12.48 plus shipping.
Thanks for all replys. Being winter and would like quick fix will go with axle replacement...

PepBoys carries the 12pt 8mm to remove the bolts also. Be sure to replace them with new ones. BTW they normally don't come with the kit. Paragon-products carries both.
Remember, before you try to remove the old bolts, spray them down haevily with a good penetrating liqiud like LiquidWrench or PB Blaster. This will break down all the old road-gunk. Then 'set' the driver head into the bolt by tapping it with a rubber mallet. If there is any dirt in the bolt head, remove it first. Most of these bolts shred VERY easily so you may only get one chance at loosening them.

There is nothing to be re-built on the shafts or the CV's, shafts dont wear, cv's dont have un-worn parts that can be re-used.
Replace the CV or get shafts with new CV's on them.
As per Melchior above, you often have ONE chance to get the old 12 star bolt out.
I clean the bolt with an small screw driver (dig the crap out of the splines), motivate the bolt with a few wacks of an light weight (300 gr / 10 Oz acc my conversion program)hammer, use the same to get the toolbit seated in the bolt, block the rear wheel to prevent rotation and slowly add torque to the tool till the bolt breakes loose.
Then give it one full turn before I move to the next bolt.
Start with one bolt on the tranny, then move to the wheel, then back to the tranny etc. till you have done them all.
Replace bolts.

Try <a href="http://www.raxles.com" target="_blank">www.raxles.com</a>
A couple people on the audifans list have used them. You get all new lobro joints, not the rebuilt ones.
No affiliation, and not sure that they carry sets for the 944, but worth a shot. Their prices are supposed to be pretty reasonable.
Oh, and if you screw up the bolt heads, I've always had great luck just using a pair of vise grips on the bolt heads to get them out. You'll have to replace them, but you should be doing that anyhow.
Good Luck!
