On Friday my 89 S2 died multiple times during stop and go traffic arrrrrrrgggg. I nursed it home hoping to avoid a ride on the tow truck. Above 3000 RPM it felt strong, so I figured the ICV is most likely acting up. I pulled it and cleaned it with carb cleaner and PB Blaster.
Since it uses 12 volts, I hooked it up to a battery and cycled it. It flips back and forth rapidly (wish I had done this before cleaning though) In the closed position, it has an opening a little less than 1/8. Does anyone know if 1/8 inch is in the ballpark, or have any thoughts / advice on testing. --Roy--

Sounds like the correct performance to me. I use WD40 to clean them, carb cleaner melts plastic. There is a test procedure in the manual that by-passes the idle controller to set the main idle. Got the repair manual?

I decided that the gap must be OK since there was a metallic click when tested with 12 volts and no binding. After cleaning I connected the hoses to the ISV and shoved assembly back in place under the intake manifold. I reinstalled the rubber boot between the throttle assembly and the air flow box, Started and ran ok on the first try !!
One tip, I marked the air hoses with white paint next to the arrow on each side of the valve, so I didn't have to futz arounnd adjusting hose position. Wonder if the PB Blaster was the right thing to lube it with ?? --Roy--
