strange clicking noise coming from rear axle
whenever i accelerate from a dead stop, just after i release the clutch, there is this strange clicking noise that get louder as the revs come up, and then goes away once i reach higher speeds? it also occurs during engine braking. ne body have a clue as to what is making this noise, its driving me nuts and i hate to see my beloved p-car suffer <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

Yes CV joints should be checked first.
Also you could search archive for decelerating noise.
I had ticking noise coming from bolt which holds two freewheeling sprockets in differential. That eventially touched pinion destroying pinion, differential, oil pump etc.
Porsche reinforced this bolt from 18 to 20 mm for later models.
Check also oil in your tranny, if you havent changed it for a while change it now and see if there is metal debris in old oil.

definately sounds like cv bearings, but you should check your lug nuts first of course. If it's the cv joints, its beyond repacking, the whole cv joint needs to be replaced. Those run around $90 a per cv joint w/ boot. There are a total of four in the rear, but most likely its only one or two. Those two are usually the outer ones. The noise comes from the ball bearings being warn out, and theyre popping in and out of their joint, making a real loud clicking sound, it sounds really bad, but it's nothing huge. I would try not to drive on it.

lowend,
I agree with the consensus. I had an 87 951 that started clicking very suddenly. I replaced both driveshaft/CV assemblies with low mileage used components (freshly greased of course).
I didn't drive it a lot so I wasn't worried how long they would last. Otherwise, I would have bought new.
Anyway, that fixed it.
