So what's the most economical brake upgrade for an NA?

Default So what's the most economical brake upgrade for an NA?

Rennbay kit is pretty awesome, but at $700 I can't justify spending the cash on it (that's virtually what I paid for the car).

Can I use the early turbo brakes on my car (86) without getting the turbo shocks? I've got a nice coilover setup with rebuildable shocks and I really don't wanna get rid of that. Will the NA shocks bolt onto the turbo spindles?

Just finished my upgrade and this is what you need to complete the task with no exceptions on the shocks:

1 pair front 951 calipers and pads
1 pair front 1986 951 rotors
4 factory bolts for the front calipers
1 pair (left and right)of front hubs and spindles from a 1986 951 (complete with bearings on each)
1 pair of 1986 951 front struts. (yes you need these unless you want to cobble it together, unsafe in my opinion, BTDT)
1 pair of front brake hoses from any year 951 and the metal noodles that go with them.

Any pics of the difference on how the NA versus Turbo struts mount on the spindles? I'd really like to use my struts

i didnt think there was a difference in mounts??? as far as ive known u can slap turbo hubs and brakes right on there??

The spacing between the mountig holes is different...2.5" on the '86 951 and 2.25" on the '86 944 NA. Also, the thickness of the steering nuckle mounting plane is different...18mm on the '86 951 and 20mm on the '86 944 NA.

Is the thickness of the strut mounts on the spindles the same? I could always fab up brackets to extend the one on the strut base to reach the 2.5" holes.

Cool, I could definitely throw in a bracket in between the 951 spine and 944 strut mount to make it work. 2mm piece of aluminum on both sides would keep it nice and perpendicular.

i'll have a set of 86 turbo hubs, spindles and front rotors fs soon- you would just need front calipers and lines.

alternatively, not sure how price will stack up, but you could get a Racer's edge adapter kit and Big Red's w/ floating rotorssized for an 86 turbo (Lindsey Racing sells a kit). You'd probably want to balance that out with 951 brakes in the rear, but those should just bolt on.

Probably more expensive than what Dan is offering, but I thought I'd throw it out there

Not sure what your NA has, but you will also need 16 inch wheels as the 15 inch ones will not fit on the front set-up.

My 15" phonies clear my turbo brakes ona 1985.5 just fine.

For what your going to spend on parts to do the swap the kit from Rennbay is probably cheaper, maybe equal. Heres what i spent on my swap (off the top of my head)

4 Calipers- $350
spindles and hubs- $250
New bearings, SS brake lines, pads- $200
I didnt have to pay for it, but you will need an alignment, we Charge $165, not sure what an indie charges for an alignment, Ill use $80
You can modify late struts, many have done it, some agree some disagree, that could be another $200- $400 (guesstimate) if you replaced them.

So you have $705 for the front for the turbo setup. And i shopped around for the parts for a while, just trying to point out if your going to do it right, it wont save over Rennbay's kit.

And they just bolt on...plus they are brand new. And Wilwood brakes are very good quality...and since your car is an NA...more than enough braking too.

My stock 15" phonedials on my '85.5 NA clear the turbo brakes.

I spent $480 for my front brakes....brand new cross-drilled rotors, new bearings and the calipers are fully functional with new hardware.
