Default Water Pump Gasket Sealing

What have you found works best on the water pump gasket for sealing? I don't want it to leak, but want to be able to get the gasket off the mating surfaces without too much scraping if needed.

No sealant is indicated in the FSM. Just the gasket. No problems with leaks on mine doing it that way.

I use a thin coat of red RTV on both side of the gasket.

Yea I use a sealnt too cuz the first time I did one, I didn't use anything and it leaked. What a pain to fix, never again. Bruce

I would guess this has more to do with the quality of the rebuilt pump you use and your block prep than anything else. I'm sure some of the cheaper rebuilds probably don't get decked the way they should.

A bit of RTV shouldn't hurt anything - and if you're been running like that I guess it doesn't. I might do that for some extra insurance on the next change.

I prefer Indian Head gasket shellac (Permatex makes the same). It is very sticky, can be applied very thin, and doesn't squeeze out into little strips that can break off and float around like RTV. I just did my water pump and it is bone dry. It dissolves in alcohol when you want to remove it.
