Question repair stuff, bearing rattle, steering fluid lines, hot idling, I am screwed!!!!!!!!!

Greetings folks,

I am new around here as far as posting etiquette is concerned. If there are any disconcerting liberties I had taken, please discount them as ignorance

I have a '88, 924S that I bought last year. It has just now crossed 100000 miles. I had been taking it to this mechanic in Springfield, massachusetts who has a reputation of being some kind of all-in-all in fixing expensive foriegn cars, you know, like Bentley, Rovers, Porsche, and what not.

Story is, as soon as I bought this car, and the drive to foster one of these, I replaced the timing belt, found that the water pump was rebuilt and OK, and also replaced one of the tension rollers as it was, according to this mechanic, "stuck in place".

Couple of months ago, I noticed the engine wiggling like ***** on its mounts and got them replaced along with the struts, that were broken because some engine part sat on them. A great many dollars were spent fixing and I ended up with a whooping amount of $3500 in the first year of my holding this bitch.

I dont regret it, but our man here, the mechanic, did not even bother to brake fluid flush, notice power steering fluid lines leaking and failed to notice a rattle which might necessitate the front end to be opened again within an year. What can be done about these people? I recently took it to some other specialist in Boston and got to know this.

Alright, that aside, I am planning on become a specialist myself

Where do I start? Let us see.

I need to fix a rattle that is classified as a bearing noise from the front end of the engine. Problem areas mentioned in the various threads in this list indicate water pump. Are the tension rollers involved in this by anyway? The water pump was found out to be a rebuilt and looked OK according to this mechanic last year. One of the rollers was stuck in place and was replaced with a new one. He says the others looked OK that point of time and did not bother to replace them. I point out the rattle and he says now that could be the other rollers or the pump.
Any thoughts on that?

Where do I find a document that describes the 944 engine to a good extent. I am looking for a good book or some material on timing belt and the front end as a whole.

The engine acts peculair while idling. It suddenly becomes very hot and the temperature shoots up. The fan activates this point of time and the engine cools down after i start driving.
What could be the reasons for this?

Do a search on this thread, or email me directly for a link to the "factory manuals." It may not be 100% legal, but the manuals are available in pdf format. Spend some time with those and you'll at least know up from down! That's what I did and have gone from zero ability to doing just about everything myself.

By the way #1: You should be ready to get some tools... won't be cheap if you don't have much.
By the way #2: I lived in Gt Barrington for 7 years before moving down here a couple years ago, so good to see another Berkshir-ite here!

First off, welcome to the board. Secondly, find a reputable specialist if you don't want to work on the car yourself, I'm sure someone on this board could recommend someone nearby.

Buy a Haynes manual for the 944 (same engine) - it's not the bible for this car but is a cheap primer for most tasks. The full workshop manuals are very in depth.

The temp issue may be air in the cooling system, low coolant level or it might be quite normal - all cars I have encountered tend to heat up at idle / stuck in traffic, then cool when rolling - the rad needs airflow. Does the needle drop when the fan comes on? If so, that is good. My temp gauge sits at half when running, slightly more when under heavy load and climbs to near the block at the top before the fan kicks in and bring the temp down to half if stationary in a traffic jam.

A new convert to the forum, thanks to the initial shock of what it costs to maintain these cars. I would highly recommend finding a mechanic in your area who really knows these cars, not just someone who was worked on imports.

For the jobs you can't handle or diagnose yourself, you have to trust what he says. Too many people think their mechanic is trying to rip them off when they suggest that other work is necessary. You can't afford to let events take their course with these cars.
