Question Think I found my AC Problem.. Can anybody identify this wire?

The black wire is coming out of the AC compressor, it appears to have been shredded by the pulley. There is a wire with a connector above it, but I'm not sure if this is the right one. I haven't picked up a shop manual yet..

Thanks..

Hey stolarzj,
Think that that's the clutch actuation wire for your AC compressor. There's an electromagnetic clutch on the compressor that allows for it to only be driven by the motor when you need it. That's why the pulley spins with the engine but the front of the pulley is stationary until you turn on the AC.

Got the wire connected, but still no cold air. So I pulled the cap on one at the AC valves, and got about a three second spurt of gas. It's been sitting, and the AC probably hasn't been used in almost two years. Time to pick up some gas. I am guessing it is R134A, since a Porsche dealer replaced the entire system in May of 2001. They did list R12 cans on the receipt though, hoping it was just a non updated computer..

if the car has been retrofitted to 134a there should be a blue label under the hood saying so, if the service valves are externally threaded then you are still running R12. The new valves for 134a are threaded internally and have external accomodations for quick connect couplers. If it is R12 you should not be able to buy it without a license. Good luck, Mark T.

as far as the wires are concerned, there should be two wires coming from the clutch, one is very short and attatches to the body of the compressor with a phillips screw and the other connects to the wire that is circled in your picture. Before hooking anything up, check that the clutch assy. does not rotate on the compressor. Those wires should not be able to get cut by the pulley, they should not be long enough. The wires should come out of the clutch at the 12 o'clock position, if they are anywhere else the clutch is spinning on the comp. body.
