OT: M3 rip-off (worth reading)
This was just posted to Bimmerforums.com and I thought it was appropriate to post here. So many folks buy Porsches long distance so I think this is a good read for folks looking for uncommon cars.

<a href="http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e21/forum.php?postid=3379064" target="_blank">Part II</a>
This is just too unreal beyond words. Yes, this guy made mistakes, but how many of us have bought used cars and decided to overlook a few things?

BTW, CARFAX turns up nothing on the stolen vehicle. CARFAX is mildly interesting, but far from gospel. My dealer ran one for me on my 328i and I failed to turn up a prior accident. I found out about it when I went to have a xenon headlamp replaced under warranty. A week after buying it. It wasn't covered to the tune of $1,000. CARFAX sucks IMHO and I thought that before my experience.

thats the kind of guy who needs to screw the wrong person and have them break into his house and get their $10k back one way or another.
dont buy used cars from florida i guess.... in the case of my out of state car purchase i sent all the money to a seller i never met for a car i never saw and had it shipped to me, the only reason i trusted him was because he was a rennlist member.

That is friggin' unbelievable! Just goes to show that life is stranger than fiction.
I do hope that this man will have justice...I have to agree that the jerk he bought the car from intentionally kept him off balance.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and the owner says it's a Swan, run! Run like hell away!
There were so many warning signs...but I do feel for him, because crooks make money off of honest people by twisting the truth enough to make it seem plausible.
I think the words Sociopath and Pathological liar come up.
Sorry it happened to any of them! We should take it as a lesson, earned at someone else's expense, but should not be ignored.

As far as carfax is concerned, they think that my truck is registered to someone in Alabama. I guess that the DMV in Alabama entered the wrong vin when someone was trying to register their truck.

wow.. okay then, my next used car purchase will have a huge checklist entailed before going through with purchasing a car.. like checking to see if all the vins match up, thats just nuts.

I read the whole story.
I guess you have to look at a lot of these cars so that the minor problems are easier to spot. He got so caught up with the cosmetic condition of the car, he missed the other problems.
You also need someone with you who is neutral about making the purchase, and to help you make the final purchase decision.
It is interesting to think about the number of p-cars you see on EBAY from Texas or Florida, it makes you wonder about them. Particularly the ones we have seen here with incorrect factual information.
