Roof Antenna

Roof Antenna
Does anyone out there have info on using the roof antenna? I have found info in the service manual indicating that as original equipment, this was a combined phone/radio antenna needing some sort of electronic splitter to make it useful. Is is possible to use this antenna for the radio? Is some sort of electronic conditioner required/available?
I have located a radio antenna cable which appears to come from the roof antenna. It looks like a normal radio antenna cable, but it doesn't work when connected to the radio. It would be nice to find a way to use it.

How about this...
Dave,
Those antennas were never put on the 944 to my recollection. The first of our line to have them were 968 coupes.
However, perhaps your previous owner installed it as I did on my 85.5. If that's the case, then there should be an under-dash (passenger side) amplifier that the antenna plugs into. The plug that is in the back of your stereo could very well be the original, from the windshield antenna. What I'm saying is that there might actually be two wires behind your stereo or near your amplifier.
One other thing to check is to be sure that the antenna's grounding point is making a good connection under the antenna base.
By the way, reception is noticeably better with the roof antenna than the one in the windshield.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. This car did have a windshield antenna -- that wire is under the dash. PO replaced the windshield with a cheap one without the antenna. I know there is an antenna pre-amp up under the dash to the right of the glove box, but haven't been able to make the roof antenna work with it. Maybe the roof antenna is just no good?!?
Thanks anyway.
