Post wiring up cd/receiver (radio)

Since the SOB who broke my window and stole my CD receiver last fall wasn't nice enough to label the wires he left behind-------

My wiring is a bunch of spaghetti. Looks like there have been several aftermarket installs so I'm trying to unravel the mystery. I've been able to figure out the speaker wires. But need assistance with determining which is which in the harness behind the radio slot?:
1) ground (Brown wire I think)
2) ignition
3) constant 12v

Anybody out there got a color reference? Thanks guys.

Just did this on my father's 944 yesterday ( 1984)...if I recall correctly, the brown is ground, there is a red with blue stripe that's switched power. There's a red with white stripe that's constant power. Don't forget to connect the antenna amp wire ( there should be 2 wires aside from the antenna lead)

regards,

Joe

There was a very helpful web site at the following URL:

<a href="http://reality.sgi.com/wws_corp/stereo_faq.html" target="_blank">http://reality.sgi.com/wws_corp/stereo_faq.html</a>

However, the page isn't coming up for me today. I hope it hasn't disappeared. Anyway, you might wish to try the site and see if it comes up for you.

All links above failed this morning (on my computer, so that does not mean anything )

Newoldguy: you might want to try Pelicanparts site, they have wiring diagrams (and parts diagrams) for the early 944.

In general:
Ground is ALLWAYS brouwn
Constant 12 V is ALLWAYS red
The switched 12 V is red/white IIRC
They all come in the same sleeved bundle (in mine on the right hand side in the console).

Easy to miss so dont forget:
The little black wire that goes with the antenna wire is the power to the amplifier. To be hooked up to the radio output.

Edit:
1) I do not know the year of your car, but the early wiring diagrams did fit mine.
2) it might be advisable to install the new radio in an easy take out sledge.
The wiring is installed to an frame in the radio slot with contactors in the back.
The actual radio slides in and connects up.
At least the dash will not be ruined and the wiring will not be messed up the next time some junk steels the radio.

Guys,
Thanks for the replies! I think I've got it thanks to your input. I couldn't get the sites to load either but the color coding was what I needed.

The only thing I'm not quite clear about it the antenna power lead. I can see it coming from the wiring of the antenna plug. Do I simply put power to it?

you can make it much easier on yourself and go buy a test light.

touth one tip to a ground, then touch the tip of every wire until you get a LIGHT ON.. that is your positive.

then touch it to the positive and touch the other end of the light to every wire until you get light on.. NEGATIVE

then finally, touch one end to a ground, then the ignition on, and touch ever wire except the ground one and the positive one, until you get light on. turn the key off, and if the light goes off with it then you have... REMOTE IGNITION

then take a 9v battery and touch the tips of each one so you can find out what speaker goes where. the speaker that the wire hooks up to will crackle a bit.. BUT, i dont know how the factory fader hooks it all up, so that might not work.

More positive info might be found here:
<a href="https://rennlist.com/techarticles/924Stereo.htm" target="_blank">https://rennlist.com/techarticles/924Stereo.htm</a>
(Rennlist is a realy perfect site, thanks JohnD & staff)

The black wire that comes with the antenna wire is to be connected to the radio output marked antenna.
This output will provide power when the radio is switched on, thus preventing an continuous power drain over the amplifier.

Shaun, thanks for the tip with the 9V battery.
Did not know that one, used to use multimeters for this purpose (they actually use an 9 volt battery for resistance measuring).
