Question Transmission rebuild

Rennlisters,

On my -86 951 I have gone through 2 transmissions within a year and I am now leaning towards having one of them rebuilt instead just buying used one again in as-is condition.

First one lost the 18 mm bolt in differential. The same which was updated to 20 mm on later models. Tranny look original and car was driven around 132000 miles. I have a used differential, but I haven't set the backlash due to missing expertise, tools and shims to adjust ring and pinion (which are also slighly damaged)

This one with LSD developed extra sound which can be heard when accelerating in gears 1-4. on Fifth I haven't heard the sound, but I haven't really accelerated on boost.
This tranny saw 8000 miles on street, maybe dozen autocrosses and 5 track days, all with street tires in about 8 months. No knowledge of it previous history.

Does anybody know contacts for people who have experience in 944 transmissions?

Can I do the rebuild myself? All my gears work except for 2nd! It makes a horrible noise.

What is the cost to get a trans. rebuilt?

Someone tell me who to contact in Southern California?

What is the cost of a used replacement?

Good reputable shop seems to offer basic consumables, bearings, synchros, seals etc and work for ~$1700-$2000.

Used can be substantially cheaper although my last one stood up for 8 months...
