Post Yokohama AVS ES100 review

I purchased the Yokos from tire rack in a 225/50 - 15 size and recieved a phone call from tire rack informing me that they wouldn't sell them to me. After explaining that they were for "off road use only" he let me have them. Nice to see that they are checking up on you, but gimme a break. Well, three days later I recieved two bails of two tires each. I called a local shop recommended by tire rack, but they were closed to to NOPI Race Wars. (WTF??) So, I called Tires Plus which I had a terrific experience with. I took them the tires and the car and two hours later, they had the tires on and alligned. What a difference it maes to have ti alligned and the wheels balanced.

The tires have MUCH better wet and dry grip than the Michellines I had on there. One thing that I noticed that I had never seen before what that after some spirited driving, I felt the tires, and they were rather gummy. Sounds good to me! <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

Overall, these tires are terrific! I would highly recommend them to anyone that is in the market for new tires.

I'de like to agree with what was said above as far as the tires being great overall, in the dry and in the wet. Don't even try running them in the snow, however.

I ordered them from Tire Rack and received no calls like that. I was not aware of the ES100's track-only status?

i've read a lot of posts recently about the TR calling and telling them they would not sell that size for that car because it technically isn't for our size rims/cars. they are just looking out for themselves, they must have been having a lot of problems with idiots getting "low profile" tires for there cars and having problems becahse they weren't doing it right...

Fabulous tire. I have them on my 2000 328i. I've very pleased so far. Ride/noise/grip (wet and dry) has been excellent. Just as expected. I've posted several times that I'm absolutely sold on Yokohamas. I've had A520s (best rain tire I've ever experienced), Paradas, some more pedestrian tires, and now the AVS ES100s and they have all been excellent tires. The A520s and Paradas both lasted 40k miles of fairly spirited driving. I'm a hard core Yokohama customer now. They will go on all my cars (except perhaps the race car).

I've also had Summitomo HTRZ-II tires and Kumho 711 tires. Both sucked big-time. Neither lasted worth a damn. The Kumhos had crappy grip as well. I only bought them because I was unemployed at the time and needed to save whatever cash I could. In the long run it was a very bad move. The Summitomos were decent on the track (surprisingly enough) but on the street they were so-so and the wet grip was terrible after they had some miles on them. Yes all tires are like that, but they were especially bad.

I'm going to second George's findings on Yokohama tires. My dad had used A0080RS and A008RSII on his street/mostly track car and I am currently using A032R on my 944 for street/track. Excellently engineered tires that perform precisely as advertised. The grip is really only second to michelin pilot sports (and of course hoosiers but those aren't street legal) that I don't think are worth paying an extra $100 a tire for. What other company makes really good tires at reasonable prices? Bridgestone...another Japanese company. They must know something about tires...
