Default Hex socket head bolt on S2 starter motor

Instead of two standard 19mm bolts retaing my 1990 S2 starter motor (as I expected would be the case reading Clark's Garage), I've got one standard 19mm bolt on the RHS , and a hex socket head bolt on the LHS. (It looks like about a 10mm hex key is needed.)

WTF? Is this an S2 thing, or has a non-standard bolt somehow found it's way into my starter motor over the years?

If it _is_ an S2 thing, anyone have any idea what would motivate the change?

Also, if someone could confirm the size of the hex driver required, that would be helpful.

This was the case on the 89 S I helped work on in Denver last weekend. One hex bolt, one regular bolt. Maybe it was a late car change.

Yup, I have seen the allen bolt on a few different 944's as well. Probably S2's, I don't remember anymore. And yes, it is a 10mm

Yep same here. because the skinny guy that took the starter out left, i installed the starter on the 89 951 and i didnt know which side the allen went back on.

That allen key is another "thanks lance" for giving us access to his garage.

BTW did you try Rico's yet?

I looked at my extra S2 motor that in my garage and it does indeed have the allen bolt towards the center. I fgorgot to measure it but it looks pretty substancial
