Smile Who has installed Motec?

For those of you that have gone to stand alone engine magagment using Motec, what do you think of it, how difficult was it to install, and how much did it cost?

I hear the Motec is easier to set up than the Electromotive. A mechanic at the local shop just put an electromotive in a 3.0l 951 and said it was a pain and recommended spending more on the Motec and saving the labor.

I'm putting together a list of future mods and am trying to get info to prioritize them.

TIA,
Daniel

Before you write off the Tec3 you might want to check with Chris White at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~enhancement944/

He has a plug and play system for the Tec3. He has helped others and myself with the install of the Tec3. I used what I learned from him and set up a friends 951 with 400 to the rear. It took less than 2 hours on the dyno including a beverage break or 2.

Check the SDS website. They did a 951 recently and it is on the projects page.

I am using this on my 914-6 and can answer some questions.

I have installed a few MOTEC systems. Good equipment great harness, lots of features. Expensive comparatively, more expensive because of proprietary sensors. The down side beyond price is crappy DOS software. We tune them and install them but don't sell them. We sell LINK, WOLF and EFI systems Italy.

I have installed nearly every stand-alone system you can name- and some left nameless. The Tec3 is sposed to be better- but I still would highly recommend MOTEC over any other system. I have never seen a Motec system fail-ever. As far as tuning and installation that is largely a matter of who does it- if you yourself install it it might take longer and be a bit more frustrating- or not- depending on your experience. For someone like us- a Motec dealer and a professional car preparer it would be less so. An experienced operator should be able to tune a car on dyno in four hours or less.
My experience/perspectives on the following engine management systems-
DTA- Best choice if you cannot afford MOTEC, I am a dealer for them and if you are interested please feel free to contact me offline- I currently have very attractive pricing.
SDS(Simple Digital Sysytems)- really too simple IMHO but works fairly well- not as tunable nor is accurate enough for race engine support
Haltech- Decent, but not very user-friendly nor flexible enough- they have some new hardware/software coming out though, and I am anxious to see it
Weber/Alpha- Good system but almost no support in this country
Electromotive- Good simple unit, but not nearly accurate or reliable enough for a race engine, however for the money their coil-pack ignition is the best available
EFI systems- awesome but expensive and not as user friendly for some- very competetive with Motec and nearly the same or more money-
Link and wolf-3d are both newish systems that have come about from the import tuning rage- and they are good but NOT race quality units- there is a reason almost every race car uses MOTEC-

What derrek didnt tell you about Motec is that you can use ANY sensor and ANY type connector- you dont have to use theirs- Motec has the ability to adapt and set sensor parameters for any sender you attach to it- though this isnt as easy as ordering one from them that the unit has already been calibrated for. Nearly all of the units above use GM sensors, most can use Bosch/VDO/LUCAS/Siemens in their place. Check out http://3r-racing.com/home.htm and call or email Dax(the Motec rep) and he will give you a quote. Motec is not as expensive as you think- and is nearly infinetely upgradeable- from a simple dash logger or all out telemetry- its expensive but worth it.
