Cool Pics and a question

Here are some pics of my car(well one): <img src="http://members.aol.com/brrt50cal/myhomepage/5.jpg?mtbrand=AOL_US" alt=" - " />

I was wondering why only my rear speakers work and not my fronts. I fooled with all the dials and such but nothing seems to work. I'm thinking for some reason the wiring is fried and so are the speakers. Or it might be the head unit. My car is a 85.5 so both are quite old regardless and need to be replaced

Ok, few things to check. Even if your front speakers are 'blown' they should still make some noise...they are very easy to remove. Simply take off the grille's and unscrew the speaker (you do not need to remove the door panels). Question: Do you have a fader switch for the stereo? It would be a roller/switch on the console in front of the shifter. This switch may have broken. As for replacing the rear speakers, you should probably search the forum for more on that topic.

Figures....Thanks The only fader switch I have is to switch between left and right. Its the stock stereo so I'm not totally sure if there should be one.

I'd pull the radio see if the fronts are plugged in. Or if you're friends with an electrician, you could borrow one of those things where you hold it to a wire to hear its frequency to see if anything's going through it .. I wish I could remember what the tool's called ..

An easier way than using a $1K+ scope (I just bought a nice one, BTW) is to take a AA battery, and rub it between the speaker wires at the radio side... you should hear some crackling from the speaker in question if the wiring is good (and the speaker is plugged in).

$1K scope?

What are you doing? Timing H-bomb triggers?

Go down to the local electronics surplus and get a $50 used one. Works great for our simple needs.

Yes there should be some noise or other out of the front speakers. I didn't realize till recently that the front speakers on my car were mostly dead until I had occasion to pull the door panels for window problems. Nothing left of the surround that positions the speaker cone. So the voice coil was hanging on the magnet. Wow! what difference a set of new speakers make!

Check the factory fader. This gets gummed up from spilled coffee and such. The stock radios have only two channel amps and the fader is used to go front to back. Newer units have four channels and thus the factory fader is not necessary.

I like those aiming stripes! I've had a hard time lately running down pedestrians and have been thinking some aiming stripes might help.

No .. I'm not talking about an oscilloscope .. it's a little thing, looks like a remote control, and when you hold it to a wire it sounds the frequency on a wire. Man I wish I could remember what it's called, it's a nifty little tool

You're talking about a tone generator. You connect a little box to one end of the wire (either through an RJ11 phone plug or with wiring connectors) and the other end you use a wand to "listen" for the tone generated by the little box.

It's commonly used when tracing wiring for voice or data cable.

Hmm...It has to be either the head unit or the wiring because I just got new speakers and hooked them up an nothing...

There is a chance that the wire in the door jam is broken. Your car may not be set up for all four speakers or the previos owner unplugged something due to a problem.
