Talking 944 full of HOT air!

hello....i just purchased a 1987 944. i had the oil cooler resealed, temp fan switch fan rel=placed, my radiator flushed and the coolant system bled. I had all the belts checked out..and the oil changed. Before i took the car in, i had no cool air coming throught the vents. NOW that i got the car back. it CONSTANTLY blows warm to hot air. Im in savannah GA ....and its friggin hot in the summer time. what would you suggest i have checked out next?

Check the plastic clips behind drivers foot panel(to the left of your foot). When they break(common)you get hot air all the time! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Check out the two little white clips that attatch the two servos to the flaps that control airflow. If one of the clips breaks, its respective flap pops open letting hot air in. The clips/servos are under the drivers side dash kind of behind the radio. There is a black plastic cover you have to remove with three screws in order to see the servos. I found that in two out of three 944s, someone has already removed the cover and not put it back. Anyway, you should see two tiny motors attatched to gold rods with white clips. If the clip breaks, the rod pops off and hangs freely. One moves when you turn the temperature dial, and the other moves when you move one of the left/right sliding controllers on the climate control. The part is like $2 at the dealer.

There are three thermisters which register air temp. If one of these burn out , it can cause these symptoms( ask me how I know) there is one in the pass. side fresh air intake (under hood under plastic panel at the base of the windshield) one in the plenum behind the two central registers in the dash and one above the glove box at the end of the temp. sensor tube. These look like the end of a safety clip sort of and it is usually obvious when they are burnt. I bought new ones at Radio Shack and soldered them in myself...$2.00. Good luck

hey dave, never heard that solution.. interesting... what do these things look like? got any pics anywhere? what are they called @ radioshack?

chicklittl: welcome to rennlist! its a great place (usually). when you are at a red light, idling, and have the **** to 4 and on the coolest, does it still blow hot air? or just sort of warmish?

"Check the plastic clips behind drivers foot panel(to the left of your

Ummm... actually, the clips in question are to the _right_ of your foot... more like your mid-calf, the right one, not to get too personal . Anyway, on the left side of the console, under the dash. Unless someone in the past left it off, I think you'll find a plastic cover over them, held on by 2 or 3 screws. The broken pieces may be inside the cover...

If you've got a Porsche dealer locally, they probably stock them; if not, try Zims or Paragon (Zims is closer to you for shipping).

<a href="http://www.allzim.com" target="_blank">www.allzim.com</a> or <a href="http://www.paragon-products.com" target="_blank">www.paragon-products.com</a>

And welcome!

Thumbs up

Hi

lately I had the same problem. After a minor crash ($1400 damage) the roads came loose. A google search on 944 heater clip gave the following,
<a href="http://www.tech-session.com/Paragon/Tech/944_htr_clip.htm" target="_blank">http://www.tech-session.com/Paragon/Tech/944_htr_clip.htm</a>

Including some pictures how it looks like.

One of the clips in my car is still broken and the rod lies just one it, but it helds for the moment. <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />

Yeah I have the same problem.. happened when I went over a bump at a slightly faster speed than I should have. If I turn up the AC full blast it blows as if I had it on full heat =P

Weird though cause it only gets really hot at higher speeds, such as when I'm on the freeway I *have* to roll the windows down or the passenger starts complaining haha.

Thanks for the info

Operator, Not Dave here, but yes, the little metal bead in the black plastic ring (at the bottom of your pic) is one of the sensors. Their electrical resistance changes with changes in the temperature of air flowing across them.

There are three; that one, one in the mixing box (deep under the center of the dash), and one at the end of the corrugated hose that leads forward from the small round dash grill (up near the forward end of the glovebox).
All are inputs into the climate control brain in the dash. If any go bad, are damaged, or develop serious corrosion in their wiring plugs, you'll get wonky action from your heater & AC.
Jim, more fine 'Porch' engineering... they did it sitting on the back porch, after a few too many steins of beer...

thanks jim! as always you ARE the Climate Control Man!

the cc engineering on this car is ridiculous... simply insane. so can i really get those things from radioshack? do they just pop out? i think i might go and change all 3.. or at least the one there and at the end of that fan hose in the dash....

Operator, I dunno about getting replacements at Radio Shuck.. never had one go bad, myself. My problem was always just wire plug corrosion. But they should be standard components.. tho' there are various values, I think, based on the type of metal used (?), and I'm not sure if they're RTD's or thermistors...similar devices, but not identical.

The other interim alternative, if you've got really good manual dexterity & patience, is to use a zip-tie to secure the dam' heater valve in the closed position (pretty easy on the 968; less so on 944's & 951's, I think).

Jim, I hear Hot Dog King callin' my name....
