Question Balance Shaft Vibration

I recently finished my first water pump/belt change and took my car out for a test drive. No valves went flying through the hood, so everything’s good there. There was, however, a vibration that increased at certain RPMs. I think one or both of the balance shafts might be slightly out of alignment. I aligned the top BS v-notch with the notch in the back cover at 12 o’clock. The bottom BS is my question. I aligned that one’s v-notch at 12’oclock too. Is this right? I think I’ve heard something about a mark on the back cover at 7 o’clock or something like that. I’m not sure. So where should the bottom BS be at TDC? Thanks in advance for the help.

All will be made clear...there's a reference pointer on the belt housing adjacent to the bottom shaft that your V should line up with.

Chip, the bottom one gear is mounted 180 deg to the upper one.

Here is the way to check

The upper one should have the stamped "O" visible through the large round hole. When installing it should be mounted with the "O" lined up to the key on the balance shaft.

The lower one has the "0" where the narrow slot is. It should be 180 off of the key in the blance shaft.

In both cases the V-notch in the gear should be lined up with the tabs in the plastics cover.

The top one should be genrally up and the bottom one should be generally down. This is about in the 7 o-clock position.

HTH... <img border="0" alt="[byebye]" title="" src="graemlins/wave.gif" />
