Post So many valves! (ie 944s engine rebuild)

I am looking into a 1987 944s for a possible daily driver. The prospective car has "bearing salad" in the oil filter and has low oil pressure. Would the engine need to be rebuilt? If so I am clueless to where or how to rebuild a 944s engine. Any information/opinions would be helpful.

Without knowing anything else about the car, or your skills as a mechanic, I'd say avoid it like the plague.

944s aren't worth that much and there's a lot of them around - given that parts for them are horribly expensive and they are not especially easy to work on, it pays to buy the best example you can afford - and it's easy to find really nice N/A models for cheap.

The S is a delightful car but it isn't that much faster than the 8v model, and the head is, shall we say, "delicate". I love mine, though.

I have heard that metal shavings in the oil could be from the timing chain sprockets wearing. Someone here with an S said he saw metal in the oil when he changed it over the course of months, then the sprockets stripped out. I have seen this metal in mine as well but I have not seen the sprocket wear yet. As far as performance, I dont see much difference from an 8v until I hit 3500 rpm. Up there it has more torque than the 8v.
