Default US VIN question

I want to buy a US spec 944 S. I noticed that the vin number on the chassis was different from the one on the car's license (chassis WPOZZZ94ZHN******, license WPOAA0945HN******) The last 6 digits were the same. I didn't inspect the a pillar vin as I usually check euro cars. On another topic some guys answered me that there is no problem, and that the different vins are normal on US cars. Can somebody confirm that it is 100% normal, as the car is in perfect condition and I want to buy it. If you had a photo I would deeply appreciate it ! Thank you !

Yes, it is 100% normal. Mine is the same way and I had the same question when I bought mine.

VIN positions 4-6 denote the market
AAO = US/Canada
ZZZ = Europe/ROW

Postion 7-8 is the model (94 =944)

Position 9 is test/filler, so the Z vs the H is no biggie

The rest match, so it looks like this was done at the factory

Looks like it was originally intended for ROW use when the chassis was built, but then shifted to meet North American market demand?

Look at your own car, the chassis number on the firewall.

My 83 has this as well. It was a tourist delivery car too. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

However, I used this "discrepancy" to negotiate a lower price.

The deal is that when the chassis is built, they don't know where it's going, so the firewall gets ZZZ as a placeholder.

As the car gets put together they figure it out and put the AAO or whatever in its place on the other vin tags.

The different numbers caught me by surprise last week when I was looking at a parts car. I looked at the VIN on the chassis and got all excited thinking it was ROW. It wasn't (Thanks bro for pointing that out before I bought it)

Yep! That't the correct answer. Been discussed a few times here. i bet a search of ZZZ or WP0ZZ pr WPoZZ will see numerous other confirmations.

i bet nobody noticed the vin on the firewall is usually surrounded by gray paint or primer. it looks like a piece of tape was put over it before the firewall was painted.

Cool! One more piece of 944 knowledge, thanks!

It's cold, and I'm lazy But will do once it warms up. They're saying there's a good chance we'll warm up near to the freezing mark on Sunday, maybe over, warmest it's been for a couple of months. I have several inches of fresh snow waiting for me when I get home tonight
