Post HELP! paint is shinny but looks cloudy deep inside.

I bought my 86 944 about a year ago and slowly I have noticed the paint on the hood only, has started to look cloudy or hazy deep in the paint. You can see this the best in the garge with the garge light on. Outside, the sun has to hit it the right way and you can see it. The paint is extremley shinny so I dont understand what the problem is. Has anyone experienced this and does anyone have a solution or know what this is?

I hate to break it to you this way , but that is the beginning of the end .The "clouding "will continue to increase till you will eventually see small little cracks that look like crows feet, that is called "checking".This will not happen overnight , but you might want to ask around for a good bodyshop in your area.

Rearding the cause of the "checking".

Is this caused by the heat from the engine and improper heat insulation??

Thnx

You can always do what I do and wax it every week, that should help slow it down, just make sure the surface is super clean and the application cloth/pad is clean, otherwise you'll grid dirt into you paint

exact same thing is happening to my hood. i only noticed it after a nine hour 3-stage wax job with meguiers. interesting. i just tell people its custom and that its air brushed storm clouds.

That's a bummer. I polished and waxed mine with Meguiars and noticed that the hood looked a little cloudy. I figured I had not been thorough enough, but it sounds like it may be in the paint.

Other threads have mentioned certain waxes that cloud German brands of paint, but I thought Meguiar's should be OK.

It is just that the paint is getting old and starting to deteriorate, lets face guys the original finishes are 10 to 14 yrs old.Just natural progression. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

I'm too new to the game to pretend I know what I'm doing however, for what it's worth I've owned my '87 944 for 3 weeks. The paint was in pretty good condition to begin with, however the hood was the dullest part of the car and had some clouding along the front edge. The front fender flairs also had a bit of clouding. I did the 3 step wax process using Mothers products...about $30 bucks worth. I'm really happy with the results. Mind you I did step 1 twice on the hood...once using also of elbow grease...the second time! The results were worth it. Maybe my clouding wasn't the same kind as the others. I too thought it was simply dead paint, and I'm pretty sure it was. We don't have the super hot days up here in Canada so maybe the wear and tear on paint and what ever our clouding is may be different than a hotter USA climate. Anyway, be prepared to have lots of paint coming off using step #1 and #2. Don't panic...keep going. The results are well worth it.

Which MEGUIAR'S wax did you use? Many have polymer additives that may cause the clouding you are talking about.

I used Meguiar's 3 step process, but my paint looked pretty good so I skipped the step 1 cleaner. Step 2 is polish and step 3 is pure carnauba wax.

I'm going to start over with step 1 and really give the paint a good cleaning. That'll either reduce the clouds or make 'em worse.

Instead you might try a non megiaurs product like 3m imperial hand glaze for dark cars. You should also consider 100% carnuba wax. I'm not a big megiaurs fan.

Just curious--how much would it cost to get the hood painted? If they are that faded/cloudy, a good paint job would cure the problem--not sure if we are talking $150 or $500 though!?

Recently had an estimate done. Both headlight covers, header panel, and hood, $630. Taken off the car. Don't know if that makes a difference one way or the other. Wrench is going to fix some things while the paint is being done.....

I've achieved very satisfactory results using the Mothers California Gold wax system. The glaze really adds a depth and richness to the paint, especially on dark colors. Just my 2 cents.
