Post 944 transmission whine

My 83 944 has a loud whine coming from what i assume is the transmission.

Ive searched google for some answers and didnt get much. Some brief mentions of "ring and pinion bearing" and also "differential bearing"

The sound it makes is comparable to the sound made when someone downshifts to help slow a car.

If anyone has ideas on what this is, the importance of a fast repair, or anything helpful, i'd really appreciate it...

TIA,
Steveo

i'm not sure if you are talking about the same thing, but in 1st and 2nd, my transmission sounds like a school bus... but its not too loud, its noticeable if you listen for it. its kind of annoying, my transmission has been rebuilt a la P O and i just recently changed gear oil. let me know whats up!

Hmm, school bus(ish) is probably a way to describe it, but mine is rather loud

Hopefully someone here has some ideas.
