anyone tried old strip adhesive for hatch glass?
I was wondering if anyone had tried to use the old style strip widshield adhesive for the hatch glass repair.
I used the 3m urethane adhesive and it failed after a few months. I did not use primer which I have heard is required when using on bare glass.
I think the strip is made for bare glass, but in a stiffer frame such as windshield. I used it years ago for the rear window on my 914 and it has been fine.
thanks,
Art

Hey Art,
i know 9xAuto has a 'kit' they offer to address this issue, but i havent heard anyone comment about it, good or bad, nor have i searched the archives. It would be a good idea to check it out or ask about it.
I would imagine that many people have this problem and simply arent or cant do anything about it for lack of a good fix.
I've been thinking about tackling it myself, but have other more pressing issues to deal with first. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

check the archives... this was discussed a few months ago and someone gave the process for using the 3m stuff and said they had good results. i think it involved using something to "etch" the glass prior to applying the adhesive.
the kit sold by 9xauto is a cosmetic cover-up for chipping factory adhesive. it won't hold the glass in! and please! search the archives before even thinking about buying from that company...

check out the thread below. There is specific mention there of 3M part# 08609 -Window Weld Primerless Superfast Urethane Auto Glass Sealant.
Also mentioned is the 'etching' technique noted above.

This is one job I'm not looking forward to. I can see from the outside of my hatch that the outer seal has separated substantially, but the hatch is still water tight and doesn't make any noise so I guess I'm OK for a while.
I'm considering running a fine bead of silicone seal around the outside glass/metal interface just to hold things together as long as possible. Anyone tried this? Does it look like crap?

i've seen one or two done like that. Up close it doesnt look great, but then again neither does the old adhesive all cracking and falling off either. If you have a leak, however, and dont want to try something intensive (above), i suppose its not too bad.
I think the key would be not messing up the sealer -putting down a good even strip. Doesnt look easy to do though if youre really trying to stop a leak. BUT, i've not tried it myself -only looked at a couple.
I'm probably going to wait til it gets bad then just go for it.

I used some silicone stuff to seal my rear window. It worked for a while but I think it made it worse. It now looks like it expanded and pushed the glass further off of the hatch. Now I have no chose but to reattach it.
