clarks says that the 3 piece unit in his opinion is just as reliable as the new units. he also says that allignment is more crtical for the one piece units.
getting the oil pressure relief valve uptdated is going to cost me 800 bucks..... don't realy have the money for that right now.
I'm going to take the oprv out again today and clean it with brake clean then oil it and stick it back in.

In addition when he gets that early style 1-piece retrofit valve he needs to make sure the old 'sleeve' remains in the block or the new OPRV will not seal. Having the sleeve move like that does not sound right, out of 4 engines and all of them were in there tight on mine. The only way he will find a used one is if someone has one on a blown early engine and replace the o-rings. I sold one about a year ago. Even used they usually go for more than $100.
$800 WTF, where do you live where that part is made from unobtainium? You can clean that 3-piece all you want but you better first find out why your sleeve is moving so easily.

you may also want to change your muffler bearing while you are in there.
this place sells the muffler bearing and blinker fluid.

is that what it is? the "sleeve" I guess moves a couple mm back and forth. When I stick the piston in the bore when it gets to the sleeve that is were I have to turn it so it goes further in so it isn't just smoothly sliding in all the way in with no resistance when I put it in.
I don't have the money to replace teh Oprv with an updated one right now, can do it in a couple months but not now as I still owe money on my clutch and torque tube repair. I will have to pay a shop to reseal and allign my cooler housing as well as I really don't want to do the oil cooler myself (looks like a bitch) and new oprv in canadian dollars/ shipping is going to be 430 bucks from paragon.......
not sure if cleaning my old relief valve and just sticking it back in will be too risky to drive on for the next couple of months.
yesterday my oil pressure was fine actually better than before, would be at 5 bar on start up and slowly drop to 3 bar and 2.5 bar at idle.

well like I said the part including shipping will be 430 dollars canadian from paragon.
and I assume 3 hours or more to get a shop to remove my oil cooler housing and replace the gaskets and allign it properly for the new new relief valve.
you can't just stick a new relief valve in there without alligning the housing which requires removing it or else the valve will bind in there.
so yeah about 800 bucks for a new relief valve..... sounds crazy to me too.

You can often just loosen the housing mounting bolts some with the new OPRV threaded down and tap it around until the OPRV feels like it slides in and out easily. You might have to drain coolant though. The 1-piece valves operate internally only so binding isn't really as much of an issue like with the 3-piece. BTW: That sleeve is supposed to be locktited into the block at the block end so it's not supposed to be loose at all.

anyways I'll try cleaning it today and keep an eye on my oil pressure.
what can I use to clean the relief valve and how can I clean inside the bore? scotchbrite for the piston?
but how can I get inside the bore to clean any possible dirt in there.

The problem is that if the slider stick in the 3 piece you can run too low of oil pressure and the motor will fail. The 3 piece is very sensitive to aligment and it moving freely. The 1 piece is all internal so it is not an issue.
Run the risk if you want, but if I were you I would just get 1 piece replacement and just stick in in there. As long as it does not bind when you put it in it will work. One the 3 piece sticks it is likely to get worse and worse each time.

okay.... I can buy one I guess and stick in in.
if it does bind won't I wreck the new 430+ dollar valve?
I'm going to phone my parts dealer and see how much they want for one. i'm guessing of paragon wants 309 U.S dollars not including shipping myparts dealer will want 600-700 for the valve.....
anywyas thanks.

okay I phoned two local parts dealers here, one said 450 dollars and another 500-600 quote lol.
paragon will come to 430 shipped. wtf?
how can a simple valve cost so much money.
damn I just need the car to last another 3 months without blowing up, in May I'm going away to Greece for 2 months and this is my last semester of University so I'm done school in september (at least for a year).
looks like I'm going to go with the clean it and stick it back in and hope it doesn't fail again.

no the piston didn't look visibly scored. but maybe the bore is scored or it has to do with the sleeve moving?
I want to take it out again and scrub it and clean it with brake clean.
is scotbrite bad to use? it's abbrasive. maybe just clean it with an old toothbrush and brake clean.
