Post Bought a big f'n surfboard today...how should I strap it to my car?

I picked up a 9'2" longboard today and left it at my friend's beachhouse, but I may want to go chase hurricaines and stuff so I need to know the best way to strap this big f'r to my roof...any suggestions for a decent roof rack?

ribs,

Don't know too much about surfboards/surfing(all I remember is Joel Tudor being "the man" when it came to longboarding), but I remember someone on the list made a ski-rack for their 944 utilizing an "extra" sunroof panel. They drilled the rack directly to the panel so there were no mounting issues. I would try to find a used roof panel and then rig your own type of surfboard rack so there would be no worries about paint damage, losing your rack, or losing your longboard. Good Luck and Hang Ten

You have to wonder whether the plastic arms that hold the sunroof down are strong enough. I don't think I'd trust them even with skis. A surfboard would generate a lot of lift.

What you need is a girlfriend with a woody. Stationwagon that is.

Maybe you could fasten blocks of plastic foam--like they sell to carry canoes on a car top--to your board somehow, then you could pass tie down straps over the board and through the car, either before or after you close the doors.

Weegie,

You're wasting your time. These youngsters think a "woodie" is a boner. Nice one ("woodie" though.

Here's a thought ... why not mount that giant surfboard horizontally (across the roof) and see how much lift you can generate? Maybe you can get the Porsche airborne!!

I seem to remember seeing a roof rack mount that is designed to hold surf boards in the PET cd program. Does anybody know if you can buy this part anywhere? I imagine it would cost an arm and a leg if you were to buy it directly from porsche though.

There are a lot of non-OEM racks for sale that are adjustable, but I don't know if any would fasten on to the Porsche roof edge. Why not take your car into a place that sells racks to see if any would fit?

Just pull out the sunroof and let the board stick out the top. Depending on the length, you might be able to put the rear seats down, front seat up and forward, and stick it in diagonally.

We're loadin' up our woodie with the boards inside and hangin' out singin' our song...

9 feet? Hm...Try putting it in the front seat out the sunroof...Might get wet chasing hurricanes...You may want to invest in a $200 VW and two long nylon straps.

IIRC you can mount a yakima rack on the roof (it will just be a short distance inbetween the two bars) just use wide straps to hold the board down and you should be good to go. I actually have an extra set of towers and bars for sale, email if you're interested.
