supercharging will wear down your engine as much as if you turbo charged....

either way, i would get the engine rebuilt so it can handle it....im getting mine rebuilt to turbo spec then going to put my supercharger on...

Sell your 944, take that money and the money you would put into a supercharger, and buy a 951. That way you get the extra power, better brakes, and all the other goodies Porsche meant to go with the extra power. This gets you more stuff for less money.

A SC will be harder on an engine than a turbo would because the SC is always under boost, unlike the turbo.

Also, turbos are a fair bit more efficient than SCs. Boost for boost, a properly sized turbo will have significantly lower compressor discharge temps.

It is cheaper to get a 951 and build it up, but I have too much work to revert it to non-turbo and sell it.

One of the fastest NON-TURBO in my area.

Also for any given rear-wheel HP generated, a supercharger will require more boost than a turbo because some of the power generated goes into driving the SC itself. Kinda like blowing on your sails to make your boat go faster.

yeah...i'll agree....SC is always under boost, and will wear down the engine faster, but the turbo on my subaru is always under boost too

i just love that sound of the BOV

for me, i like to have something different...and i think when i get my 944 down, i'll be one of the few that will have one....

The SC cars are under boost all the time between the head unit and the throttle body, but the manifold is still under vacuum when idle or cruising according to my gauge. And above 3500rpm the BOV will release, ie release the gas at 6000 and it will keep on whistling down to 3500.

The only difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger is in the way they are driven by the engine. Otherwise they function exactly alike.

There is no need to keep the SC engine under constant boost. A simple "dump valve" system will solve that just like on a turbocharged engine.

The boost itself does not wear the engine down. The wearing process is mainly due to rpm and the amount of pressure created in the combustion chamber (ammount of fuel/air burnt).
This means that at full throttle the engine will wear slightly more because of the increased combustion (more power) pressing the piston rings harder against the cylinder walls, while at part throttle there will be little or no change because you are not getting a full combustion anyway.

More sophisticated SC systems use a lock-up clutch on the SC pulley. That way if you're under vacuum cruising on the freeway, the SC isn't even freewheeling blowing air through its bypass. The Toyota MR-2 uses this method on their SC car. The hotrodders down-under like to add a turbo in addition to the SC for even more boost!
