Post OK, is my turbo going? (Dang it)

Hi, I was on my way to work this morning with bright sunlight behind (driving West-- duh) and I was driving in a 'spirited' way. The car is running great, pulls like a racehorse all the way up to 6500 in whatever gear I am in. Except...

I notice that once the boost gets on up past 1.5 bar I see a blast of smoke come out the tail. After I get off the boost it stops. I've always noticed that the car uses a lot more oil when I'm putting the hurt on it.

Because it's otherwise running so well, I suspect my turbo bearings are leaking. Is that people's take? The car has 90K miles, and it's the stock turbo. I have also found residue of oil in the intercooler piping in the past..

Assuming the turbo needs help, can I get people's recommendations for a replacement? I don't want to increase the boost on this engine any more. I can't replace a blown head gasket in a weekend like some people. So a much bigger turbo is out. What I would like to see is boost coming on sooner, before 3100 rpms, and coming up quicker. I also want a bolt in solution- no collateral mods. Pull the old one out, bolt the new one in, done.

Recommendations? Parts source? Cost? These are all the questions that will plague me until resolved.

Thanks folks

hmmm. good topic. too bad no one is chiming in.

i also burn a lot of oil when running a lot of boost. i also have found residue in my intercooler plumbing. i have never seen smoke but a friend following me up a hill once commented that he smelled burning oil when i downshifted and floored it to pass someone.

my car has 78k on the factory turbo. i wonder if i should be worried?

I don't know if it's a bolt in but..... http://www.mercedes-benz.com/e/cars/e-class-t/facts_m2.htm

An Lindsay boost enhancer will bring boost on earlier and harder. Have you tried one?

Thad -

Mine did the same up towards 120,000. Did not use up thart much oil, but had a good amount of blowby and smoke when I was all in it. Over time, a little water started to seep out as well. Shaft had a decent amount of play, so you can check that as well.

I went with the Huntley Cheater 2, a K26/8 with a little diffrent compressor wheel. Spooled fast, made great boost with no drop off. I ran it at 15psi for a while and it was great. Layed down 240rwhp with everything stock except a refreshed head an cat back. 18 psi layed down 278rwhp.

I've got an LBE. It helps a little, but there's only so far you can tweak things without different hardware..

Perry, is that cheater 2 the stock housing with different innards? So it would be a true bolt-in? I'm really not down with modding anything, putting one in will be hard enough...

Mine may have been doing this for awhile without me noticing. But if it needs help, I'm willing to help it. If I get a little more zoom, even better...

All I can contribute is that a film of oil on the intercooler pipes is normal, any more is abnormal.

Hmm..actually I can add a little more.

If you do end up replacing the turbo, I think just about any turbo would require a fuel controller...Your best bet (if you dont want to upgrade the car further) is custom chips to get the new turbo working well.

Whats your oil consumption when you drive spiritely? If you go to an autocross you see a lot of the cars puffing smoke out the exhaust...

I have Autothority ST2 chips now...

If I just poop along without pushing it, I hardly use any oil. If I am hitting it, I use 1/2 quart per fill.

You think I'd need a fuel controller even with a cheater turbo? Maybe I should just go with a rebuild... I have no time now for elaborate fiddling...

It is a total bolt in turbo. No mods needed. You can run it as is, stock, or with a WFR head gasket and bump up the boost. You have enough fuel stock. Mine did have APE stage 2's, but my MAF was not on the car at that point.

Anyway, it is a perfect non mod swap. Same as the turbo that came on the turbo s, but has a diffrent compressor wheel.

I may be way off track here, but my na has similar symptons. It never smokes on startup/cold days/acceleration. But when I floor it up near the redline, or hard up a hill smoke comes out.

I think it's worn seals from what I've read on this forum, but I don't feel the need to do anything for a while. The oil consumption is pretty low, but probably slightly higher than a normal car.

Sam.
