Post Stalling after initial start up.

The problem occurs when I start my '84 944 up for the first time each day or after it has sat for a few hours. It will initially start right up and idle smoothly for about five minutes or so. It will then die or stall as I start to drive away. When it first dies it will crank and crank and not start. If I wait a few minutes it will start up but be extremely loaded up. After running for a minute or two it will clear out and run and start the rest of the day. If it sits for a few hours it is the same routine over again.
