hartford you say? where exact? shoot me an email.. i could drive the car to the mechanic for you and have it checked out for half of that.. make a little money for myself but not near as much as that mechanic will be making. as long as the car doesnt get me stranded or explode while im driving it, then i think youll be getting a letter from my parents with a lawsuit or something

hey, question: why do you have to take the car to this particular mechanic? how about i take the car to a porsche dealer? its way cheaper.. well not way but like ~150 bucks instead of 250. Maybe hes doing a lot of checking?

email me - tell me your thoughts.

It sounds like if it were that mileage it was beat to ****. The rough idle could be completely beat a/f ratio, timing, fuel, probably a million other things. The washer jets not being there probably means there were those led ones on, so the po was definately a kid. Not that that's bad, but a bunch of power .. even more than stock, having a kid drive it .. I'd say would equal a hard time on the clutch and trans .. and probably a whole lot of other things.

I hate to add to the negative feedback side, but people who need money also tend to "bend" the truth in their favor. Not unlikely that he is doing quite a bit of "bending" as to the cars history. I don't mean to be so synical, it is just what I have seen in my past experiences. I would just walk away from the car.

Also regarding a PPI: a mechanic can probably tell 90% of the condition of a car within an hour. For 2 hours labor, he could also do a compression test, leakdown test..etc. But IMHO, it's not worth the 2nd hour of labor.

Especially if you consider the condition of this car, the initial hour long PPI will probably bring to light enough issues with the car to make you say no to it. So don't waste your $$ on the high-tech testing stuff (compression / leakdown test...etc).

Just my $0.42

Why use a mechanic that is over 2.5 hours away for the ppi?? Get one that's in the neighborhood, so he can spend the time looking at the car instead of traveling!

i would say something is up with a car that has 39k miles and in that condition...the paint bubble has to be from a repaint..factory paint just wouldnt do that imho, a tear in the seat at 39k? wow..that seems odd to me...

Hey, before you bash teh kid, listen to me.

I'm 22, to many here, that's a kid.

The First Owner of my car took pretty damn good care of the car. He must've, since it was new then, and he must've had $~60,000cdn to afford it. (or whatever the cdn value was back then) The SECOND owner, however, didn't know how to treat the car, and I don't think he appreciated it, AS much.

I on the other hand, found the car, looking like ****, in a ratty used car dealership. I bought it with what pennies I had, and I love the car.

I owe a lot of money too. But, if I had to sell, god forbid, I would not lie about it's condition.

Many people would walk away thinking it will need $$$$ of work, just becuase there is a small band in a corner of the front bumper, and the headlights go down 1/4 inch too far.

Little do they know. . .

So don't pass up a good car because a kid had the good taste to buy it. Take a good careful look at it, see how bad it is. Better yet, take some pics of the engine bay and what not, as good as you can, scan them, and show US.

For $6,000 it's hard to find a car like that, even if the records are missing. And who cares, as long as it runs good?

Remember, even if it DOES run good, sooner or later you WILL have to spend $$$ on it. That's the way these cars are. Any time you buy a used car, you run the risk of buying a car with problems. I took a risk with my car, and I'm glad I did.

I budget $1000 a year for repairs.

I would say that a perfect condition all records 1988 951 non S with 40K on is roughly worth 10 to 12. The two main things that could eat you alive on this car are the paint (Easily 4-6 to redo correctly) and the engine (Easily 3-5 to rebuild). I would say offer the guy 4000 to 4500. I would not pay $800 for a PPI. You could rent a car trailer from U-haul for $50 and tow the car to a shop. You might be able to get someone on sight too. Another thing to consider is any car this modified could easily have been driven really hard. You could have transmission issues($1500), clutch issues($1500) or Ball joint isses($800). Also - a paint job of any kind with those miles would mean a wreck of some type.
