Default Can I remove all under dash A/C stuff

I was wondering, is all the stuff under the passenger side dash related to the A/C? And if so, can I remove without messing up the heating which I want to keep.

I think I can safely remove anything with the name nippondenso, right?

I have some big pictures of the stuff I want to remove at my blog. Just click on the pics to enlarge.

Thanks in advance for advice.

So you're doing A/C delete?

You need to remove the compressor (need another bracket), close the pipes that go to evaporator and compressor.

I already took the compressor, condensor, etc out. I did the cheap bracket as recco'd on specc944.com tech section.

I took all hoses out. Just wondering if the rest of the junk under dash can go.

On my S2 the stuff under the dash in the center of the car was a royal PITA to get out. You basically had to remove the dash to get at it...
Someone told me that when Porsche built these cars they started with the heater/AC and built the car around it !

The HVAC unit under the dash is all one unit, so if you want to keep heat, all of that will have to stay.

If you have everything torn apart you might be able to remove the evaporator, which is the only part of the a/c system left under the dash, but you will most likely have to tear the heater box apart and then figure out a way to reseal the heater box to cover up the holes left from removing the evaporator.

Your car is an '83, correct? If so, it's easy to pull the complete evaporator setup from under the dash. Here's a write-up I followed when I yanked mine from the 924S.

On a late model, I understand it's much more difficult.

just don't completely take out the wiring harness w/ the relays. the ground on that harness is the ground for the fresh air blower.

For 83-85 and the 924S the A/C and heat are two completely seperate systems. seperate blower motors and all.

For 85.5 and later they share many of the same parts so removing A/C completely is more complex.

My 83 has the under-the-dash AC removed. Ever since then I cannot get air to flow out the dash vents, only defrost or by the floor works. I've checked the little clip, I can hear the flap move when the lever is slide back and forth.

The problem has been unresolved for years!

Thanks, I am going to take the rest out this weekend. All I care about is having defrost for safety reasons. I will be driving the car to the track.

Mike C,

Good write up. I did block off the lower opening; however, no air comes out of the dash vents.

Nk,

Defrost is good, but when you are sitting in staging roasting to death some air out of the dash is a must have. Also, I used to drive my car to the track too. Try driving on a summer day in the rain with no way to get air to blow on you. Hot? Stuffy? You bet!
