Default Water pump question

Happy New Years all. I drove my car for the first time in about 1 month and noticed antifreeze under it. I have been pushing it around the garage and another car that sits in front of it needs a water pump and heater valve, so I thought nothing of it. Well drove her for about 45 minutes, came back and noticed a trail of antifreeze, look under and there is more.

I lifted the car and can't pinpoint were it is coming from, it apears to be coming from between the waterpump and block, has anyone ever had this happen before? I don't want to go through all that work to find it wasn't the pump.

Background on the car, all new hoses, new expansion tank, new rad., new heater valve. Everything in the cooling system has been replaced with the exception of the pump.

could be the seal to the block has failed.

when I have a hard to find leak I like to use flourescent dye (made for finding engine leaks) and pour it into your coolant then run the engine and look with a black light to see where the dye glows and that's where it is leaking......

Leaking in that area is very likely water pump. I've had good luck with rebuilts but I can understand how someone would get more 'piece of mind' with a new one (especially if they are paying a shop to install it).

I will be doing the job myself with the help of some fellow rennlist folks. I have heard bad things about both, just wanted to get a better feel for how people felt now.

I have always used the reman pumps. Never an issue for me. LMK if you want me to come up there and lend a hand/tools.

Richard, the only thing I dont have is a flywheel lock, so pick one up since we need to pull the pully.

I just put a rebuilt turbo style pump in my car from Zims and it has 2,000 miles on it now with no problems. I know that's not much but it's still a good sign. Plus they warranty it for 2 years, so if you don't mind doing the work yourself it's worth it.

I had a similar slow leak. At first, I thought it was the WP, but traced it up to the coolant neck where it attaches to the head. Coolant was running down the front of the engine and around the WP housing, so at first it looked like the WP was leaking. Definitely worth a look.

Just heading into a WP job myself ('84 NA), do you HAVE to take all the pulleys off to get the rear half of the belt cover out? It looks like some of the pulleys would clear the holes in the cover.

Even if you left a few rollers on that could be left on that would only save you like 10 minuets. When I did mine I just took them all off.
