I've had three Sciroccos over the years, one was a '78 model, and the other two were '87 16V's. They are great cars. My last 16V was a spectacular car, a car-show winner that would give my 951 a serious run for it's money around a tight track. Drop a 2L short block in there, p&p'ed head, intake cam and exhaust, and you'll be pumping out 170bhp in a 2500lb car. Throw in a set of Boge ProGas shocks, Spax springs, Autotech hollow sway bars, and 16" wheels/tires, and it'll outhandle pretty much anything on the road. Even in stock 1.8L form (123bhp), my Scirocco 16V ran circles around my friends older RX7's. These are great cars, and are easily transformed into outstanding cars. It makes me sad to think about the day I sold that car.

manning,
you are correct, or at most probably off by no less than a year or two.

However, It wasnt till about '69 when datsun introduced the Z, and 510, and toyota the celica and corolla that americans took notice of the japanese cars. thats the japanese invasion i was referring to.

do we count the honda 600s as hondas?

"do we count the honda 600s as hondas?"

Ha,or even as cars? 600cc's of chain driven fury.

I always thought the Datsun Fairlady Roadster from the 60's was pretty neat (and I really don't like drop heads that much). The Toyota FJ Cruisers from the 60's and 70' are really pretty heller too (except that the bodies rust like crazy even if you sneeze near 'em).

The 87-88 16V Scirocco is good also is 90-92 16V GTI. I'd pass on Corrado G60 but go for VR6 Corrado.

IanM, this is for you!

And a little something to ponder:

Scirocco's are great cars, but like buying any used car, expect to have to catch up on the maintenance that the P.O. gave up on before the car is completely reliable.

That must've been why Wiedeking traveled to Japan in '92 looking for ways to improve the Porsche production process. And why Porsche consulted with a Japanese company (Shingijutsu Group) to do so---which led to Porsche's remarkable turnaround from '93 to today.
My wife and I currently own two VWs, in addition to the Porsche. Also owned one Scirocco, one GTI, two Rabbits (diesel & gas), one Jetta GLI (2.0 16v), one Passat, and a New Beetle.
No way the VWs have been more reliable than the average Japanese car.

The balance shafts in our motors have a distinctly Japanese flavor too. I think specifically Mitsubishi.

Manning,

It was a couple dollars to Mitsu for every 944 produced IIRC.

While I will not characterize japanese cars as "crap" there is a difference between how they drive compared to other german cars of similar vintage. I sold a perfectly good '90 Acura Legend coupe w/ 150K to buy a '90 VW GTi 8V with over 215K. Why, because of the way the VW drove. I would characterize the Acura as being a better overall car, but the GTi is just plain fun to drive all the time. Yes, is loud and buzzy compared to the Legend, but that is not what I wanted. I figure it is the difference between driving and pointing.

The real question is what type of car does she want to drive? Come to a concrete decision then find the best tool to fill your needs.

Cheers,

Who cares what she wants to drive when we have a testosterone feueled debate on whether it is better to drive a reliable car or a fun car.

Riff, i had a 92 legend coupe, and two RX7's at the same time. I had a 93 legend coupe an rx7 convertible, and a 944S2 at the same time. you can compare the rx7 to the 944, but the legend is difinitely a touring car with some awesome sports car characteristics. i bought the 944 when i gave my wife the legend coupe so I could enjoy both types of car on a regular basis.

but what do i know, im just the guy that thinks his 85 RX7 GSL-SE was more fun (maybe less capable)than his 89 944S2

That's cute

Anyway, Les wants a sporty, reliable German car in lieu of not getting a 944 *yet*- hence the reasoning for me wanting to go after VW's.
However, you can take solace in the knowledge that it was enjoyable watching some of you duke it out over the moot point(s) about the japanese auto industry

TOM R.: OT What wheels are on your car? They look pretty cool and atypical. Are they the 18inch turbo wheels or what??....
