Post Tranny fluid.

Besides changing the coolant this weekend, I also plan on changing the tranny fluid. Even went to Sears and got the 17 mm wrench. What kind of fluid do you guys use. I wil be doing my 84 and a 86 that I take care of. Both are street driving only and not very hard then.

I use a synthetic. Currently I have Castrol that I put in when I bought the car 3.5 years ago, but will soon switch to Redline.

It is rumored that the Redline makes shifting smoother, saving wear and tear on the synchros. Fact or fiction, I am not sure.

Please remember to remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug. If the fill plug does not come out then you can still drive the car.

Also, the OEM oil smelled really bad, so be prepared ;-)

I use mobil 1 synthetic. Seems to help shifting in the winter time. When I ran non-synthetic I had to wait a while before I could put the car in gear during the winter.

My '84 likes Swepco better than anything else. My '86 HATED Swepco, and so I switched it about two weeks later, first to Castrol dino lube, then another two weeks later to Redline.

I am not sure what the difference is between the two trannys, but the '86 got very "notchy" when I tried running Swepco (and no, its not an LSD unit so it didn't need the additive). The '84 has been running Swepco for years now and does very well with it.

I hope you can run the same fluid in your cars. I have to use three different types of tranny lubes for my three cars (my 968 is a tip)... no wonder my SO looks at me like I am crazy sometimes!

Regards,

I went with Redline...and it made an amazing difference in shifting...especially in the cooler weather.

I did a bunch of research for my '84, and I ended up buying 3 bottles of Redline. Then I took it to Porsche so they could strip the bolt.

See if the bolts will loosen up before you go researching and buying. Anyone in MA need some Redline?
