Hi!
I just bought a 1988 944 that I plan to prepare for DE and Club racing, while also using it for light commuting to/from the train station.

I have a ton of questions and I have not had much luck with the searches, although I have used them with moderate success in the past.

To start with, which forum should I be on? My questions are mostly related to race prep, so I could be on the Race forum, the 924/944/951/968 board, or the 944&944S2 board.

Thanks
Jack

Welcome to the group. I would start on this list and then go to the race forum when you need too-you'll know. For the prep questions this and the 944 email lists seem the best IMHO. The 944 and S2 forum isn't looked at as much.

Hi Jack, Welcome!

YOur best bet is the 924/944/951/968 forum. This forum gets a lot of traffic from both sides, the racers and the daily drivers. YOu'll find more information on strictly racing over at the race forum. But not as diverse as this one.

Just post to them all really, as some read only this one or that one, so you have a better chance at getting the info you want.

Does this make sense? Sounds like rambling to me, but I hope it helped a little.

Take Care!

Welcome aboard. I'm a fellow '88 NA, daily driver with frequent DE's. I'll be intrigued to see the progression to racecar, may consider the same in the future myself.

Agree with above, this forum is the most watched/populated. Race forum has some great stuff too and typically is frequented by club racers and PCA driving instructors. I'd monitor both.

If you do not do so already, you may want to monitor the e-mail list as well. It's a much smaller/tighter group and has some brilliant folks on it.

Keep the shiny side up,

Congrats!

Now go out and change the timing belt and if it's an "S" model the crossover chain and tensioner.

For further horror stories just search recent posts for "timing belt" and "timing Chain".

Don't get him started like that! He'll never get the sour taste out of his mouth! In all truth, post on the main 944/924/951/968 section. Lots of trafic, both race and daily driver. I understand your situtation of a track car that will also serve as a street car. It's tough, but can be done. Weocome to the group, and have fun!

Thanks guys! The timing belt was changed 30k ago, at 130k miles. I will have it tightened, though. I'll post another note with more questions.

At 30,000 miles it's time to change it. Now!

Yup, The book says 45,000 miles with a re tension at 2.5k, 15k and 30k, but the safest bet is to limit the service life to 30,000. Of course, 3-4 years is the max regardless of the mileage

Hey Jack,

Welcome aboard. You've received all the right info so far.
I recall seeing your 964 at Randolph Racing when I was having some work done on my 85.5 944. I was impressed that someone was racing a Cab--it's a beautiful ride!
Good luck & hope to see you at one of the NE region DEs.

Ken
