high voltage
I assume that the problem is the voltage regulator....
The initial symptom is that every time you hit about 2400 rpm (pretty much exact same rpm each time), the stereo turns off. When the RPMs drop below 2400 rpm, the radio turns back on.
I put a digital volt meter on the battery at idle it read over 15 volts and when you get higher it get to 16 and higher volts.
So, I assume the alternator is ok, but the regulator appears to be bad.
It appears that the voltage regulator is available separately from the alternator, so I'm going to get just the regulator to start.
How much time should I set aside to swap the regulator?

On an early...the regulator was around $50(?) at the FLAPS. You'll want to take out the airbox to make getting to the top bolt easier, then take the tensioner rod off and slip off the belt...maybe in the range of an hour to pull the alternator, 2 minutes to swap the regulator (it's two screws on the "back" of the alternator).
